Taxes and your practical earning potential are one of the biggest factors. In that regard, you can do just fine in the US as long as you are either well credentialed or clever about finding ways to earn a buck. Taxes aren't bad as long as you stay out of the more populated areas, but that's also where real money is earned. Culture is and has been going down hill here for a while.
