I think that it definitely exists. The idea that you have to behave a certain, shitty way in order to be a “proper man” is ridiculous and outdated. It is extremely harmful to both women and men as it can degrade and hurt others. However, and this is an argument for all vague terms like this, the problem with using it is that it can cause confusion. I think saying you hate all men or saying you hate all women is arseholey. The only reason I can think of for saying you hate all men/women is if you’ve been pissed off by one person of that gender and feel like you then need to categorise the rest of the gender as being shit. By all means criticise the individual but not the gender.
