I think it deliberately means something vague so that everyone who hears it can apply the abstract idea to a possible relationship. But an attempt at making it less pithy might be "only marry those with whom you are the same enough not similar enough or have enough in common with". I think he was trying to say there's a difference between similarity and being the same. And you need enough of that to make your differences the minority, however you want to slice it.

In my experience it can be hard to detect this kind of false gratitude. Falling into dedication mode prematurely is sometimes a milestone women will wait until to start revealing more of their growth areas. Hard to tell in the early stages but turns on whether she is "pushing" you into it, or "pulling" you into being dedicated. Sometimes the former is without even really knowing about it, herself. So I think the irony was that he was crashing weddings to sleep with women and got what he wanted, just not what he wanted. They also show a man and two women attempting to sleep with him, and the scene in the morning where he doesn't want to talk about it, and gets the painting are all hilarious. I'm not thrilled with the response from the audience mind you, if the roles were reversed no way it ever gets made, and I think that's the more important point to emphasize to your family.
