You’re confusing desperation with pragmatism. I’m also in her boat, and I know that men are not attracted to me. When one of them acts friendly (not flirty, but kind) I have no reason to assume it’s anything but friendship. If OP is flirting with this girl then that’s messed up, but if he’s just being nice there’s no reason for her to assume it’s anything but friendship, 9 times out of 10.

9 times out of 10 women like her are used to being “just friends” with guys and won’t take friendly attention the wrong way (as opposed to more attractive women who will automatically assume it’s flirting because it usually is). Women who are conventionally unattractive are aware of this. The kind of people who mistake kindness for attraction are the people who know they’re attractive.
