I have a child too, and while you are fundamentally right, children get older and often can self-maintain, whereas a dog needs constant attention - it doesn't go to school, it needs emotional attention, needs to go potty, and anytime you want to go anywhere you have to have a sitter or bring the dog with. Not to mention the medical bills that inevitably follow. Skip the dog and stay single, especially if you live in a city.
