Probably applies to long marriages, where one of the partners has few job skills, or is sick or elderly. I don't think it is common.

Mediator is actually a VERY good idea. That will ultimately cost you much less and preserve what little relationship is left - over a lawyer - as they tend to get adversarial and expensive quickly. If I remember right, Gotmann's research showed success (varied methodologies) to be abysmally low at two year mark and considerably worse at the five year mark. Very worth reading or listening to their "10 Principals For Effective Couples Therapy" book for what is proven to work and under what conditions. Based on research not anecdotes. Basically, it can work if both are committed, honest with themselves and each other, humble, and follow some proven paths. AND... the counciller is VERY skilled…

It depends - do you think she will behave equitably, and do you value the relationship going forward? Mediation would be far preferable to lawyers, provided you can come to some agreement and stick with that. If none of that works, burn it all down with lawyers.

If one spouse provides health insurance, the other can keep it while separated. That's about the only benefit, unless there is some chance you will get back together at some point with your spouse.
