because the courts in my state hold professional degrees as marital property and he owes her part of the value... WTF?! I've seen some community colleges offer legal courses, one of which is generally something with a name like "Domestic Relations", which covers the laws surrounding divorce within that state. This is why I've often thought the stereotype that men are the ones who are "afraid of commitment" is sort of ironic.
