What does the amount of time spent in front a computer have to do with the affordability? Dollars per hour of use. If your computer is replacing other hobbies, such as watching cable television or going out to the bar, you can take the money you save by cutting cable, put it into your computer, and still come out ahead. Or you can keep using a $300 computer, but as you say, you would "love to upgrade". I was just pointing out that he doesn't necessarily have a lot of wealth.
