Not useless, but the extra training stimulus isn’t worth the extra fatigue. 3 sets induces enough of a stress to recover from to PR the next workout for novices, 5 sets is more work and fatigue, for the same result.

Thought we were gonna devolve into some shoddy argument calling each other out for lifts etc here but it’s good to see a fellow lifter in the wild! Yep, sub-optimal. I’d recommend anyone reading, look at Starting Strength or Phrak’s GSLP. Throw in some curls for the girls and away you go

When you’re PRing 5x5 multiple times a week, 5x5 is too much volume. That’s why SS is better at 3x5, for sustainability. SL themselves say too reduce to 3x5 when 5x5 stalls. Why go through those 2 extra sets, every time, which give virtually no improvement in training effect? It mightn’t be too much volume, but it’s more volume than needed/optimum.

As a novice, you need minimal stress to induce a training effect. SL is almost too much volume, as seen by the burnout from 5x5 and volume reduction as a taper towards the end. I’d personally recommend Starting Strength. 5/3/1 is way too slow a progression for beginners, and tbh unless you’re appending loads of anchors or leaders or different formats etc, the base program is pretty crap. Most gym novices would be better following SS and watching the youtube videos for form etc, and will lift abo…

My ex got her sister to add me on snapchat this saturday, over a year after we split. The sister asking how I was because “she’s nice” and “**** wants to know if you had me blocked”. I said well i do now and blocked her. What is happening there like.

You don’t have a required tonnage. Over time however, you would want to increase it - more weight at the same reps or more reps at the same weight. Intensity and volume have a non-linear relationship so just try and focus on getting better every workout.

Typically around ~60% for GVT. But I cannot recommend it at all. It bears no advantage over 5x10 training. Also, I take issue for individuals doing such high volume training with no laid out progression scheme or the like. Form breakdown will be a serious issue. For any beginner I highly recommend Starting Strength with some barbell curls and lying tricep extensions after every workout.

That’d be tonnage. More importantly, intensity should be considered. At the very minimum you need to be above 65% of your 1RM whatever reps. Not having a go but you should pick up a copy of Practical Programming for Strength Training by Rippetoe, in fact everyone who lifts seriously should. Edit: Volume: sets x reps Tonnage: sets x reps x weight

Because anything else is dependent upon someone or something - lifting is the most intense relationship you can have with pushing yourself. 200kg on a bar is always going to be 200kg, and your ability to move that bar is solely down to you.

The gym was out of the way personally for myself and too expensive so I put a pullup bar up in my back garden. Cemented in. Throw in some resistance bands, dumbbells and a skipping rope and you can get a lot done!

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
