When people say "just be yourself" its with the assumption that one's confidence will increase, that they will become more assertive and comfortable demanding what they want, that they will begin to impose their will on the world around them, basically that they will become more alpha. I was comparing total compensation for SE 2 and salary of staff engineer (or acceptable top out at most companies, usually 8-10 years to get to this level). The actual compensation is closer to 350k. I'm certain one could raise their salary more quickly if they kept themselves on the job market and changed positions every couple years to further raise their compensation. A fresh graduate on the west coast (not necessarily Cali) or in NY can achieve salaries > 100k just starting. But the total compensation is closer to 140k when considering RSU and bonuses.
