Because it doesn't occur to most women that getting attention from men is optional. For the first half of their lives, their experience is that damselling is always a viable fallback option. They live their lives as if society doesn't allow them to fail, but while being told they are the victims. Entitlement and moral panic results. I've had some conversations with obvious white knights about this. It seems like full blown stockholm syndrome... There's another interesting statistic about pay in STEM, that I can't cite however. When you compare wages between men and women who've graduated with e.g. a computer science degree, there is a pay gap. But when you compare men and women with the same job, the gap disappears. In other words, women are not making as much use of their degrees as men. There is a pay gap by education, but not by occupation. Ignoring this difference is what leads to much misunderstandings and conflicting reports.
