Yeah, whatever his motivation is, I believe he has guilt over breaking up the family, even if the kids are 20+, it is normal that it matters to any parent what they think. Let her. You can't fix someone broken. Use grey rock or at most yellow rock communication. Check for emotional/narcissistic abuse therapy online or irl. Take your time to heal, its different for everyone, but you can't rush it.
