Here's one more anecdote. (Short version) I was admitted to a VA (Veterans Affairs) hospital for PTSD (Posttraumatic stress disorder). I was moved to the mental health ward for an additional week of observation and treatment. All of the patients were male. Well, if your retirement pension and alimony payments stop when she dies ... it becomes to your advantage if she dies sooner rather than later. Natuarally, that goes without saying - but statistically men die long before women and she is 6 years younger. I already claim 70% disability and my health is deteriorating. No sir, I cannot just stop paying. When you retire, SGLI reverts to SBP. When I separated, my then wife had to be there with me and had to sign a document that stated that she either declined SBP, or that she wanted the SBP, while I signed stating that I understood that in such a case, the payment will be automatically withdrawn by DFAS. I have no control over it.

No, the law applies to all retirees, but as of yet, there has not been a case (a situation) involving a female retiree. Most female service members who stay in until retirement are married to a service member (when it happens), and in those cases, it works out better financially if only one converts SGLI to SBP, or SBD is waved by the male. Assets no. This only refers to the retirement pension and alimony while I'm alive - as directed by federal law. If my ex dies before me, the alimony payments to her stop, but the SBP would go to her designated heir. If she has no will, then it is decided by that state.

Still, looks like your in better shape in the UK. At least it is up for discussion in the media in reports like this one. I know from living there for just a short time and following the media, men's issues are being taken far more seriously than here in the US.
