When I see things like that, I tend to interpret it as a kind of offer for an agreement: that in the course of their criticism of people's actions, they will not engage in hatred directed toward people themselves, and in return, they hope that people will recognize that it's about behaviors rather than an attack on them as a person. When it comes to the generation and recognition of personal and group identities, I think there may be a confusion of cause and effect. It seems unlikely that all of these distinctions between people were someone's willful and conscious invention which then served to drive people apart. That's not an issue of "minimizing the risk" to oneself. That's not even something that parallels robbers and thieves attacking innocent people.
