FWIW, we continued to cohabitate for about 7 months after she said she wanted a divorce. She tried to argue that was the end, but again, I had the “receipts” to prove it was months earlier.

Lots of bad information on this because the law in California has changed a few times over the past decade on this issue. For asset/community property issues, the marriage “ends” when 1 party to the marriage decides it does and takes action consistent with that decision. It does not require physical separation. It can be very simple: you a) decide the marriage is over, and b) tell your spouse that you want a divorce. (Decision + action) It gets complicated when a & b happen, but then conflicting…
