He’s not saying whether the ends of fighting in, say, WW2 was justified for the loss of life or not. He’s saying that those hardships, of fighting for your life during your formative years, made boys crave normal life and allowed them to transition into being a man. There’s nothing like that in the modern world anymore. There’s nothing that trims the fat and forces someone to become greater anymore, since life has gotten too comfortable.
