If you know someone who is going to be there, and they know others, ask them to tell you a bit about the people there. Try to get an idea how to approach a handful of people. Big groups rarely stay congealed for awhile. If it's a group of eight friends, it'll probably break down to 5 and 3 or something like that. Too bad. Once I give myself the push, I do it. Same with going out sometimes. Yes, I agree we all need time alone, but I've never regretted lunging into something. 99% of the time it clicks and I'm having fun, and I would have regretted not going. Again, this is just for me.
