Two sides of the same core cognitive bias

Which is funny to think. Seems you came around a couple years after some now ex-friends tried to sell me on reddit as a place not just for shitposting but also intellectuals, professionals, and experts to get information and communicate. I was on tumblr at that time, and while I eventually saw the error of my ways there, it's become clear this place is really just a worse version without the gifs.

Beat me to it. It's sad that, even in psych, I often have to explain what that is before the customary and deeeeeeefinitely not ironic eyeroll. Reminding people about the halo and horns effects just bounces off them too.

Lol similar happened to me except evidently I was wrong for informing an "anti-fascist" that calling themself such a thing while advocating fascist control and treatment of "the bad people" still makes them fascist. Just wait until you have half a dozen vegans cyberstalk your profile, find out you \GASP\ have commented here, and then reddit defends them harassing you.

Since I'm banned, I can't see it anymore, but many subs list the individual mods on the right somewhere (at least if you're not using classic reddit) unless the mods are cowards and have the list set to hidden. For that sub, it also lists credentials for almost all of the mods, and while I can't recall each individual, but I think clinical psych PhD was a common one.

I hear ya. I gave up on psych a while ago (long, painful story), but I still go where I think my skill are needed - irony being that most of those subs have been the exact level or more abusive and toxic than what's claimed of this one. r/relationship_advice has been one of the woooooorst, especially related to most things related to men/from the male's perspective. I've tried explaining the contradiction in supposed humanistic contexts before, even to people claiming to be in psych, but it alwa…

Because it's essentially a worse version of tumblr that incentivizes echo chamber formation through censorship mods that aren't expected to exercise higher order reasoning. It's a big naughty to inform an idiot that they're an idiot here. You don't even have to use naughty words to be cast out. Just citing sources with a "trying being less ignorant," and out ya go, because when people harass you, it's fine. When you respond, oh boy......

Not the first time I've had to sidestep a ban over mod dipshittery like defending myself against harassment. However, I did play with fire the one time I responded to a mod by calling them out for being stupid. But it was that juicy, hubristic "look at this asshole thinking he's so smart" kind of stupidity, so what was I supposed to do? Not point out the ironic and hilariously obvious despite the ratio of equally stupid people? Makes me wish I'd known not to delete my old account since it seems …

And yet no one cares, even professionally. I was literally just banned from r/psychology for talking about my experiences and mistreatment in the field - on this article of all things. Only fitting that I also posted about peoples' lack of self-awareness in that same thread. Oh well - tubthumping again is just a few clicks and an email away.

Always found this strange. I've thought a lot about the differences between common male reactions to this vs common female reactions to the equivalent, and, while it's always a cultural thing at its core, I always come back to the idea that males typically experience their, for lack of a better term, sexual awakening earlier, more readily/obviously, and while it's the butt of a lot of sock jokes, it's accepted more readily than basically anything to do with early female sexuality. After all, mos…

At the risk of sounding condescending, you're really getting into your own head about this, hyperfocusing, and over-analyzing. Especially now that I've read the other thread, it's clear that all isn't helping you. Communicate this to your therapist and together better define what you want out of therapy. Even if he's trying to guide you toward something, that doesn't imply he's trying to slather his personal views onto you. It'd be very wise not to jump to conclusions and to roll with it. If you…

Completely forgot about this. Places like Australia have taken it to such an extreme that "child-like bodies" (i.e. petite women) are all illegal to show in pictures irrespective of the person's actual age unless it's clear they're like 80. Sorry, people. That you associate such bodies with children is a you problem, one best handled by a professional.

That's because women exist to civilize men per essentialist doctrine, meaning they're incapable of acting childishly - that's the sole plight of us ruckus brutes.

Not going to hold my breath since I've tested this in the past and had it kicked back from reddit as not violating their policies. "Incel" and other epithets are still run of the mill, not to mention the number of subs that are allowed to ban people because they post here or in similar forums. Evidently we're all far right operatives because feelings and emotions.

Well, to be fair, it's more of a cult. Most of its tenets and claims require faith rather than data, and any failure of members, as I've experienced, to adhere to group norms risks excommunication and worse for offenses equaling fraud, blasphemy, and/or treachery.

Almost like patriarchy and matriarchy are two sides of the same coin, and the goal should be less trying to balance it and more spending it on something nice for the both of us. Then again, if that coin metaphor is true, that means current claims, goals, and tactics of common feminists don't make them the good guys, and that just won't do. I agree, but it's a hard one to sell 7-12 on these days though. All or at least virtually all philosophy/logic courses are so dry, it's hard for anyone to get through, and I have a hard time thinking you'd find many high schoolers actually able to engage with the material. Plus debate clubs wouldn't fly these days like they'd have to per proper debate context. Maybe if we ever get done with the current "feelings over facts" mentality.

Part of the issue is because people fundametally stopped understanding how comparisons work. While they clearly have motive to intentionally misinterpret your words, it's also part of how they "control the narrative." It's perceived as equating one thing with another, therefor is a bad, and a very bad at that. If you're ever dealing with people too simple to understand comparisons look for similarities and acknowledges differences too, your best move is to move on. Don't be an idiot like me and …

As someone with experience on both sides of the couch, I don't know where to begin. Can't call it "the" main issue, but one extreme issue is the competency gap connected to basic availability. Finding a professional, not merely just a therapist, but any professional who isn't a piece of shit is far harder than it should be. Slight hyperbole aside, you run into issues many young boys experience with the overdiagnosis and thereby unnecessary medication of ADHD. As a result, we suffer. Take me for …

Tripled. One of the most damningly ironic things intersectionals have yet to reconcile since day one is their version of the dark triad, straight, white, MALE. If you have those signifiers, those are the ONLY signifiers you have, unless you have a readily visible disability, but even then you'll still be kept on the outside at best. Granted, sorry, there is no such thing as reverse sexism/racism. It's just sexism, it's just racism. That it's against a white guy doesn't make it not sexist or not …

Welcome to the general discourse surrounding men's issues. You can try going to the same people they went to and explain your position, how you raised issues related to all journalist deaths, not just the 11% that are women, and were attacked in debate, and are now being attacked again. It's almost like removing intent as a critically relevant factor in social interaction was a bad thing. These days, people don't do things. Instead, a person acts, then a committee is formed to decipher the meaning of it, and once consensus is reached, they'll decide what you actually did/meant, and we'll have a new rule to live by so that only the "bad people" have to live squalidly and the "good people" won't have to hear words like "lady." Tell them that if they're competent psychologists, they should be capable of recognizing confirmation bias and to seek professional help to address their prejudiced, automatic thoughts in relationship to men. And, as this behavior pulls their ethical convictions and ability to have effective interactions with men into question, you plan to file a complaint with the APA with a copy of the email. Then to explain what he actually pushed for after getting some sort of proof.

What do you expect of an article that seems genuinely perplexed at the connection between "diminished libido" and "frequent porn use"? Also, bonus points to its author for failing to operationalize what "consuming porn regularly" means. It's been said age is the last frontier of real equality. Reminds me about the psychology of retail, it's always the nastiest who speak out the most. There's a negativity bias in reporting situations like this. There's a reason why you don't really hear all that many issues in respective reverse - when people are pissed, they're more likely to act out. It works out more often in reverse, and since you're always going to hear the most from the extremes, one side is over emphasized due to greater …

You see, her feeling safe is more important than his eye sight and pain. Duh. On a related note, after several messages, I now have it on abundant authority that if a woman isn't comfortable with a male wet nurse, she's not sexist, and it's not the same as her being uncomfortable if the wet nurse was female but with brown skin. "By that logic and given women now have the option to stay in the kitchen, everything that happens by leaving is brought on themselves." Eh, 70% of the way there. Jesus, been a long while since I've seen that much ignorance crammed into such a small paragraph. Yeah, it is still repeatedly deemed misogynistic because therapists "constantly gaslight" their female clients, and you should see how people react when research finds that women perpetuate sexism and abuses or suggests that we need to give more funding to men's programs. Poorly defined concepts used ironically, as is arguably fittingly done here as well, for self-serving purposes. Considering a couple weeks ago, I reported a handful of people for harassing an OP on r/relationship_advice just to see what would happen and only now got a bunch of "this doesn't violate out policy" messages back.... evidently it's a completely reasonable thing to say /s Edit: One of the reports actually had a positive result! Granted, looks like it wasn't for slinging out an "incel," and may've been more related to my general casting out lines to get a read of what is TEH BAD according to Redd…

No "do you think" about it. Check out Martin Lawrence's notorious SNL monologue that got him banned and more or less ended his career (or at least I saw significantly less of him afterwards).

While not all his points are trash, specifically those about apologetics and ad hoc rationalizations, I was just about to comment to the same effect. Sad when someone who talks about logic fails to recognize their own strawman and catastrophization, specifically because I could take just about every mention of "feminist" and replace it with "MRA/MGTOW/manosphere," and it'd fit right in with a pathetic amount of feminist rhetoric/comments I've had rape my eyes. But Reddit gonna Reddit. Feminism h…

But be prepared for the usual "you're a guy, so you can take it" double standard. Plus it may be the case that you'll be met with automatic doubt due to expectations of retaliation on your part. The more unconnected you can appear to things, the more likely you are to succeed.

Do you only show someone to be a fool if you prove them wrong... Is that supposed to be a question or statement? Anyway, no. The person, as you've shown, is capable for proving it themselves.

Wish I could find it, but there was an article a few years ago that, according to a single study, claimed regular people and kids could pick out who was the worst offenders based purely on facial expression. Anyone that looked mean obviously was, ya know, since Ted Bundy looked like a prototypical Hells Angel. Wonder if they bothered to test for racial bias in that "test" or if that was removed because it "skewed" the results in a way that demonstrated the halo and horns effects.

Reminds me of two arguments recently, one still ongoing with a vegan in denial about their moral licensing - hurting cows=bad, exploiting farm workers, destruction of habitat for more farmland, animal deaths from mice, raccoons, and more for increased crop farming=ok. There's no hope of reasoning with ideologues, so just try to have fun when replying.

Nah, you see. "Female sexuality" is a singularly defined magical unicorn and not in any way comparable to those dirty, dirty, shallow boys. Women need mental and emotional stimulation, which is totally different to men because of reasons. They aren't affected by visuals in any capacity, and all those models, actors, annual "sexiest man alive" lists, and fireman calendars are actually just for, I dunno, the gays? And even then, it's not objectification because (insert mental gymnastics).

Nah. Ya see, because fascism is classically associated with far right groups, it's physically, scientifically, and supercalifragilisticexpialidociously impossible for far left groups to act in the same capacity. It's true because someone said so on the internet, and moral licensing definitely doesn't play in here. /s if not obvious

If you've been doing this for 15 years, it's amazing if you're implying nothing happened during metoo's peak popularity. I'm not the friendliest looking guy, and while I worked with kids, every time I smiled at my female clients, it was picked apart. By the time I got tired of shit and left, we had a new ballbusting woman come in as a social worker who'd routinely put down my boys for not "manning up."

Nah, you don't get it. Because of [insert mental gymnastics], that's why it's ok if there's no logical consistency, and people deserve to be beaten if they misspell "bigger." Really though, I wish I could live for another 200 years just to see if THE WORD THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED is still given this same level of moronic power or if it goes the same way that "man" and "guy" have. It'd really interesting to see, as people realize it's literally just a word like any other regardless of "history" an…

Hey, didn't you know a white kid singing all the lyrics to a rap song in the 90s is, like, the worstest racisism there is, and they should die because literally nothing was affected by it?

No, but everything that doesn't abide by THE MESSAGE, as some call it, is deemed that ever so popular "problematic." What's even funnier is that these people are quick to call others fascist without seeing the obvious.

Yup. Been banned by a mod once who was making fun of people and ironically calling others "pseudo-intellectuals" for using "big words" on a philosophical post. Evidently "or you just read at a 6th grade reading level" is very hurtful when the reaction proves it's true.

The gym rat stereotype does not include intelligence. Ya don't say. Almost like that explains everything you've said. And I'm sure you picked up on my mirroring your stupidity. Gym rats are very clever people, and you sure got me good. Those people are creeps. Mind your own business. Says the guy giving off strong Kaczynski vibes. People talk to other people when they're in the same place. Get over it.

Yup, pretty well-known phenomenon in psych that women seek and receive services FAAAAAAAAR more often than men despite prevalence of various conditions generally being nearly the same between sexes. Hard to see why. I mean, with all the stories I've heard from friends and family, not to mention past clients over how they've been treated by therapists hellbent on convincing them they're automatically the cause of all their own problems and to stop blaming others (especially women in their lives),…

It's the very definition of schadenfreude. The very concept of "male" is collapsed into a single imaginary falsehood based on whitewashing concepts like "male privilege," so when any man is "taken down a notch," irrespective of the personage of the individual or other factors that intersectionality is supposed to consider, it's sadistically and vindictively celebrated. And it's done so in the same way that some people celebrate executions based purely on "because criminal" in boldfaced denial of…

It's a bizarre mixed message. One half is that everything in the world caters to us and our desires without limit, and on the other, we're to remain controlled, reserved, polished, and stoic at all times or we're not men and potentially something worse. And then come the "why don't you ever talk about your feelings." Just browse r/relationship_advice, and it should be obvious why.

They are pretty much equivalent, but it’s up for debate Ok. Thanks for saying and contributing nothing. But if you'd like to do something of value and given this push for equal representation is about the bias towards only high paying, low risk jobs to benefit only women, how is a gap in pay that may or may not exist depending on how you examine the concept equal to verified loss of human life disproportionately among men given the fervor over the former and scant, and often derided, mention of …

A woman my dad saw while my parents were separated stalked my family for over 25 years. Full on slow drive-bys when I was a kid and psychotic notes left on our front door. On my side, I had to set my facebook profile to private because of a young female client I had at an RT facility I worked. She'd decided we were in a relationship because I didn't treat her like shit and I "came to see her everyday." After my contact was cut and we shipped her to one of our sister locations about 6 hours away,…

Differs from culture to culture, but globally, girls are intentionally killed by parents more pretty much solely due to China. However, getting numbers from the CCP to contrast during and post One-child policy probably isn't going to reveal trustworthy data. But limited demographic data shows an unusual spike in the male population that doesn't jive with normal models, and it's believed to be due to males having a greater earning potential.

TL;DR: Been there, experienced that. Psychology and social services as a whole are dead fields for men. Well, straight men, and I just can't fathom why. Nope. Not even a little bit. Not at all. Anyway, story time and cautionary tale for any considering carefields. Years ago, I had a highly destructive young female client who trusted all of 2 staff at my facility - her main community staff and me on the therapeutic side. I was the "group facilitator," which is just industry speak for "does group …
