Gottman has some good stuff, but also a lot of cringe. The late Schnarch is more reliable on this type of stuff. While Gottman did good work on what causes marriages to fail, his counter-points on how to make them succeed weren't all that much better. He was too influenced by the failing mainstream attachment-model of marital counseling that became increasingly popular in society at the same time and same increase rate as the growing divorce rates from the 60s forward.

As a divorce lawyer ... once you have the legal separation, why bother with the divorce? The only distinction is that you can't remarry. At least in my state, that's it.

Whoops, meant Matthew 5:23-24. But on the Matthew 18 point - how does Jesus want us to treat "heathens and tax collectors"?

The Bible does absolutely insist on reconciliation. Not sure where you're getting that it doesn't. Matthew 18 is an obvious place to start. We're agreed, though, that "reconciliation" doesn't mean "pretend it never happened." Wisdom and boundaries still come with it. Also, I'm not a fan of "What would Jesus do?" I'm a fan of "What DID/DOES Jesus do?" 99% of the time, when someone says, "Jesus never had to deal with this, but if he did ..." I find that Jesus (or any person of God) actually did de…

Is God’s spiritual kingdom supposed to manifest in the physical at some point? Yes. Heaven will be a physical place and also the "full manifestation" of God's Kingdom, which otherwise exists as a spiritual kingdom here on earth. That said, there's no marriage in heaven, so this girl will NOT be your wife in heaven. Matthew 22:30 - For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage When I pray about it and really spend time with God on it then I just get confirmation that she is…

So ... I'm one of the head mods at r/TrueChristian. I know some of the mods on this forum in real life, though, so I keep an eye on it. On r/TrueChristian we have the type of open, uplifting, "only say nice things" community that you're talking about. I've been a part of that community for over a decade. I invested a LOT of time there. Still do. I was also well-connected at a number of congregations. In those last 10 years, I've discipled multiple pastors. I've been engaged in and even led both …

My primary post on the topic: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChristian/comments/je81sv/addressing_same_sex_attraction/ As a secondary, while it's more geared toward porn/lust generally, i believe everything in this post would also still apply, and I know many people who have found it helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChristian/comments/larhm7/how_i_overcame_porn_permanently/

Curious: Can you point to a single post that has been removed from this sub on the basis of its content? My recollection is that the mods frequently leave up even content they disagree with because they find value in the responses and correction, and because people can decide for themselves what's biblical. What /u/rocknrollchuck is addressing isn't content-filtering, but profiteering. Peter had choice words for Simon the Sorcerer who tried to treat the gospel in monetized terms, and God struck …

If it's genuine, that's fine. If it's an exaggeration or misrepresentation of one's position through speech that isn't backed up by consistent, daily action, then it's wrong, even if the virtue being signaled is holy.

Where did the Church go so wrong that the idea of "being attractive provides nothing to a relationship" could have begun? When it exchanged pragmatic reality for idealism. I refer to this as the "should be" v. "actually is" tension. Churchianity is so focused on how things should be that it forgets how the world actually functions. The world gets so hung up on how things actually are today that it ignores what it should be. That's an over-simplification, but you get the idea.

When was the last time you brought someone to Christ? How many guys are you discipling right now? As /u/Deep_Strength said, these types of questions are 100% related to the struggle. Galatians 3:3 is most applicable here - "Are you so foolish? After beginning with the Spirit are you now trying to be perfected by human effort?" The Spirit leads you step by step in God's intentions for your life (i.e. make disciples). His work is defined by what you do, not by what you avoid. If you want to stop w…

That sucks, brother. No covert contracts. Your reward is heavenly, not to get sex from your wife. That's just a great byproduct if/when it happens.
/r/RPChristians29/10/19 07:19 PM

But can't headship/submission exist without a couple actually being married? Can't a love/respect dynamic exist among friends without marriage? It seems to me that sex is what makes it a marriage in the first place. Doesn't that make it foundational? And if there's no sex - no one flesh bond - does God even consider them "one flesh" or married at that point?

Those are all interesting theories. I actually usually tell people that Lutherans have the best theology of any of the denominations I've seen. So, I have nothing against the Lutherans - and I didn't know there was a broader stigma of Lutheran introversion. I was just speaking from personal experience. I went to a Lutheran school for 3 years growing up, including daily services. I've also been to a Lutheran church consistently for 1 year (different city from the school) and off/on for 3 more (di…

Personally, I find AoG to be more arrogant than EO, though Calvinists top them all off ... as general trends, of course. There are certainly numerous exceptions. Lutherans seem to be the most introverted of the bunch, from what I've seen. They really keep to themselves, and despite their official stance on outreach, they seem to be the least active, leading me to conclude that this social introversion is their "insecurity." AoGs are frustratingly arrogant because any time you get into a really g…

Haha, it's a genetic thing. It reminds me of some native Americans. I knew a guy once who claimed people in his tribe couldn't grow hair anywhere but the top of their heads. Ever hear a pastor say: Happy wife, happy life. How close do you feel to God? I don't care how much you know, but who you know and how well you know him. Raise your hands, let's clap and sing hallelujah! Come down to the altar and lay it all at the cross. Let your Father know exactly what you're feeling. "One man plants, another waters, but it is God who makes it grow," as Paul says. If we want to get technical with the metaphor: We are the soil, not the plant. The Word is the seed which grows in us, therefore God's Word is the plant that springs out of us, the soil. When the plant (Word of God) grows mature enough, it produces a fruit - seed-bearing part of the plant that falls into nearby soil when it's ripe. When the fruit falls into nearby soil, assuming it's good soil it will grow into a ne…

In my experience, this discernment is either uniquely gifted to some people (i.e. the spiritual gift of discernment of spirits) or, more commonly, it's something that's developed very gradually over time. What's most deceptive is when someone develops a taste for discernment early on in their walk and assume that because they can discern between when it's ok and not to be angry that suddenly they can discern everything, like when it's okay and not to insult someone. In reality, what they're ofte…

Even in old testament times, a person's obligation to obedience to their parents ended at adulthood. That said, he obviously needs Jesus. If going to him for advice is another opportunity to show Christ to him, do it. You don't have to listen to his advice. But you can use it as context for a more important conversation.

Stats? It sounds like you got duped by a false prophet who got in your head. Now your feelings are dominated by the frame he put you in. Does the bible ask you to break from fellowship? Of course not. It says, "Let us not give up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing." People will fail you. I don't need to be a prophet to tell you that. Jesus promises that. "Get pastors on board" is a top down approach. Although it's effective, it is in essence a worldly model. Jesus did meet with leaders when they reached out to him, but his methodology was bottom up. He started with the common man until leaders were forced to take notice. Among other things, that's what RPC is trying to do - and Dalrock for even longer.

I agree that although it's ultimately a deeper spiritual issue, sometimes a quick tip that deals with an immediate urge can be useful until someone can stabilize enough for the gospel to change him, per Red's 400 series. To that end, I'm partial toward the "next ten minutes" model. Essentially, when you're struggling you give yourself a time period, usually 5 to 10 minutes. If the struggle is particularly hard and that's not realistic, go shorter to something that is realistic. Hold yourself off…

I agree with this assessment. /u/BluepillProfessor notes that women can't stand to leave a guy while he's improving. It leaves the thought lingering in their minds of what could have been if they had stuck it out. She doesn't want some other woman to get the benefit that she herself could have reaped. That's not to say they won't - just that the path of self-improvement makes it much, much harder for her to stomach that decision. Of course, if the guy tries to show off his improvement efforts to…

In Romans 2 Paul specifically addresses the conscience and does not equate it with the Spirit. I take the view that the conscience is also a fallen entity, corrupted by the sinful nature, which is why so many can do wrong without caring, even among genuine believers - they don't even know when they do wrong. I did read your whole post. I agree that God utilizes our brains as a primary means of processing his truth, and I believe the Holy Spirit is the one who inspired the Scriptures to give us t…

That was in old testament times when God spoke verbally through the Father. That passage is meant not as a training tool for future prophets, but as a display of God's character.

Yeah, I'm more inclined to look to what scripture says on the subject rather than what people say. In the old testament God spoke through an audible voice, which Elijah described as being in the whisper and not the thunderous quakes. In Jesus day he spoke predominantly by his actions for humanity to observe. After his ascent, the Holy Spirit now speaks from within by transforming us into God's likeness. Some people say this "within" means "in our hearts." They then translate "heart" into emotion…

Good points, although I reject passive modeling as a valid ministry. I often hear people refrain: "Preach the Gospel always and if necessary use words" ... but it's not an if, it's a when. Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing. A few verses earlier it notes, "And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?" It doesn't take a genius to figure out how early training combined with unique physical desperation at a uniquely vulnerable time in their life causes men to turn flawed creatures into Goddesses. Very true. This culture trains men to willfully violate THREE of the 10 Commandments I'd add a few to the list, but that's beside the point. Women HATE IT when men pedastalize them for any length of time ... They THINK they want to be put on a pedestal and that is what they tell us. However, they certai…

I don't know about "big difference." What would fit in "all evil" that wouldn't be in "all kinds of evil?" Oh, I wasn't challenging the "all" part ... it was the "a root" v. "the root" that gets me. Using a definitive article implies that if one could conquer a love of money, then he would cut off all evil from his life because there would be no other root for that evil to take hold. By leaving it as an open article ("a"), we make it clear that money is only one of several possible paths to ever…

Just a quick note: money is "a root to all kinds of evil," not "the root of all evil." Big difference. I'd wager /u/BluepillProfessor would argue that the love (read idolization) of women is actually the root of all evil, and money kicks in as a big one because that financial provision is typically why they're with the beta bucks in the first place. Most men I know wouldn't give a crap about being rich if not to impress a woman. Single men :: to get girls; married men :: to keep them or get sex …

I don't think he was saying to give up standards and just marry the first person that comes along. Even the blues aren't dumb enough to buy into that. Rather, the point is that there is still some value in marriage, whether it's spiritual only, or legal as well.

I'm pretty sure Red wants this place to be mix gender, as I've never heard otherwise. So, she's welcome here if you've already spilled the beans on the "red pill" phrase and this is better than red pill women for a Christian crowd. Otherwise, if she doesn't know the red pill by that name I wouldn't introduce her to it, including through red pill women. If recommend Laura Doyle books in that case.

" 'Happy wife, happy life,' sure ... but a happy husband makes for a happy wife." The sidebar post on the comparison game addresses this - that things women think will make them happy they find end up being shallow victories that don't really satisfy them. This is the same with us and Christ. Like proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death." Since we are the bride of Christ, that's the same as saying, " There is a way that seems right to a br…

I get what you're saying, and if they're genuinely repentant I'm inclined to agree. But if they have the attitude, "I'll just keep sinning because God will forgive me," that's serous trouble and I'm confident Hebrews 10 would apply (among numerous other similar passages): 26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 A…

I do think Jesus meant what he said about the whole "if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out" bit. He follows it up with, "For it is better to lose an eye than go to hell." Or in other words, if one were to live by the law, as the Jews he was preaching to professed to do, he's pointing out how they're being inconsistent - not following through with the law's logical conclusion. If gouging out their eyes really would help them avoid hell, that's what they should have been doing. So, if they'r…

Not a seminary student, just a divorce lawyer who knows Red IRL. That's definitely a good reference. The second half of Romans 1 also talks about the degradation of a society into a depraved state. Also, Jesus says the last days will be "as in the days of Noah." Well, Genesis 6 says of that time, "Every inclination of the thoughts of man's heart was only evil all of the time."

Divorce, yes. But Jesus also prohibits marrying a divorced person (Matthew 5:32, for example) without offering the same exceptions for when divorce is permissible. Also, per Matthew 19:8, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning." Or in otherwise, even "permissible" divorce is grounded in sin, but it's likely better than the alternative that the hardened hearts would have done in the absence of divorce as an option. John…

True, but your scenario presumes we're talking about a normal woman who has no psychological problems. That's the difference. Many people coming from dead bedrooms involve a spouse with legitimate psychological problems, usually caused by the man's beta traits conditioning her. These need to be undone. Is the sexual strategy aspect (as opposed to the descriptive aspects) supposed to be about (1) getting more/better sex or (2) getting better at getting more/better sex? what real life submission would look like from your perspective I've written on this topic a lot, but not recently. The over-abbreviated version is that "submission" in Paul's eyes is not "obey" - it is a combination of respect and acceptance of consequences. defining "alpha" From what Red has told me, RP distinguishes between "domineering jerk" and "alpha." Are you referring to the O.T. here, the N.T. or both? OT. NT 'law' is a different beast to tackle. When new commands are given in the NT (even when they mirror or cite OT law), I view that as an interpretive measure as how we live by grace. So, if Paul says, "Don't commit sexual immorality," I take that as, "The one who loves God is sexually pure - be that way" and not as "If you commit sexual immorality, you're sinning and God will view you as lesser for doing that."
