Basing your actions on her motivations instead of your own is not something I would recommend, as her motivations can be changed if your frame is strong enough. I don't buy drinks for women, personally, but in OPs situation I would have done the same since she caught him at an opportune time and showed the interest that she did. It's entirely possible, but he has nothing to lose from making the attempt. Additionally, her persistence leads me to think that unless she was exceedingly poor, thirsty, or opportunistic there was at least a modicum of interest to be worked with.
