Absolutely, and as I mentioned above, they should be used in those situations because they are relevant. But it's not relevant when saying something like "I'm meeting up with a bunch of females this Friday" or "I was with a female yesterday". Just say women. "Men" and "women" are mostly used to describe humans and is most naturally used in day to day speech and writing. "Male" and "female" are some very biological terms used for animals, science, and legal documents. You'd have to go out of your way to use "male/ female" (as nouns) over "men/ women".
