But since they dissociate wealth and status from performance I wouldn't put to much attention into those definitions. It's more of a linguistic definition than a philosophical one. We're clearly not living in a meritocracy, and performance doesn't depend only on merit. Merit is something that deserves praise and reward and for me, luck doesn't; only effort does. All athletes have merit for training, the more and better you train, the more meritorious you are. Usain Bolt is meritorious, but when it comes to world level athletes luck in the form of genes, relatives (getting support), place of birth (a country with a lot of good training facilities), and more play a huge part.
