I’m amazed by all the responses calling OP a jerk or accusing him of being “mean” for running away from an abusive situation. What if the welfare didn't come in the form of direct financial aid, but in the form of services? Like state covered health insurance for uninsured minors, free-childcare for low income families (regardless of whether they are single parent of not), and subsidized nutrition programs (food stamps)?
