Tbh I feel like polarizing these things as binary is the dumbest reasoning. "It's real and pervades everything" vs "it doesn't exist at all". No wonder we can't agree. The real world is more nuanced than that. Patriarchy certainly exists ... in pockets of context. There are facets of the world that are certainly male dominated and controlled. Certain industries, for example. I think, historically, certain political corners (although this has improved SO much and isn't as true anymore, but it sti…

I watched something the other day that had a woman (rightfully!) angrily/hurtfully explaining to her boyfriend that when he does/says certain things, it makes her feel ugly and disgusting. She asked him "do you have ANY idea what it feels like to feel disgusting?". It was a scripted drama so the bf apologized over sweet background music and everything was happy again, but i was left going "She's asking a MAN if he has any idea what it is like to feel disgusting?? And she is asking like she assum…

I was being given a tour of our local maternity & children's hospital as my wife and i were expecting our first child at the time. One part of the tour took us into the rooms you recover and stay in after giving birth. The nurse was going over the fact that the fathers are allowed to stay with the mothers overnight, they will bring in a cot, but with rules. So far so good, this makes sense. One of the rules was that if you are usually a nude-sleeper, they require you not to do so, as the nurses …

Zero. The story hasn't changed at all. You took Zero accountability for the incorrect presumptions you made. You seem to be consistent in your obtuseness across all of your comments. I didn't say promotions were denied. The applicants WOULD be internal and it would MEAN a promotion for any women applying. These women count in the hundreds but NO applicants were received yet so no individual judgments could be made. Jesus.

Youre being obtuse. You've successfully avoided speaking to the justice price gouging women on necessary products, just because you can't equate it to a men's product. I guess since there is no comparible men's product, the problem doesn't matter. I never said they should be priced fairly with comparible men's products, I said that they are being treated unfairly because they are being overchanged and overtaxed for something they have no choice but to purchase. Immediately trying to find a male …

I would agree wholeheartedly that I had called myself a feminist without truly understanding the damage to men's rights that it implies. However, I will not concede that fighting for equality in a nuanced facet (I don't know, say, reproductive rights in certain backwater southern states) in favour of women means I'm foresaking all men and their right to be equal in OTHER ways. It just seems like there is pressure here to divorce oneself of saying "I want to fight for women's rights!" without eve…

Wait sorry, no, you just zig zagged your argument. Saying "an organization that does nothing to advance men's rights" is NOT the same as "an organization that will PREVENT men's rights". I was responding to the former not the latter. Logically you can't equate those two statements. Personally i don't give a shit whether feminists advance men's rights or not. It's not their goal mission or area. If (big if) that was all they failed at, I would just be a feminist AND a men's rights advocate. I thi…

Because there aren't options "for men" in the categories of products women want price and tax reform on. But if you feel that calling an entire gender "too stupid" helps you win a debate on gender equality, I'll leave it here

You are incorrect and are not speaking from industry experience. I am A tampon and a pad costs X to make and contains little else other than paper and rayon. It is sold at X times Y for markup. One struggles to conceive of a comparable product for men, but across the board, men's value for Y is consistently smaller than its value for women. It gets close on some products that are like-for-like (e.g. deodorant) but it's still lower for men. Meanwhile, feminine hygiene products , which let's be cl…

No, that's completely wrong. You made bad assumption after bad assumption to prove your worldview. The men didn't manage women, they were hiring to fill a position. As i said. You imagined the managing women part. They didn't deal with those women's specific anything because "those women" didn't exist. I didn't determine anybody should have a promotion. I didn't determine anything. They said, BEFORE applicants were received, that they only want a man in a certainly n position. As I said. There w…

You seem to be saying that if i call myself a feminist, an organization that will never advance men's rights, I can never call myself anything else. So I can't be a kayaker AND and programmer. I must choose a side. However, others in this thread have convinced me that feminists are far more male-militant than i believed, which is helpful. I think I may drop the tag after all, like you suggested.

At work, I sit in meetings with men who pass over women for roles they are more than qualified for with some sort of belief that we will all just agree with it. They say things like "we need a level headed non emotional person in that role". If they were discriminating against a CERTAIN woman for being emotional, okay, but no, they were saying "let's find a guy instead of a woman" Women are taxed unnecessarily on products like menstrual products that they absolutely REQUIRE to buy. Women are (so…

I didn't realize that. Is that your definition & opinion or the real one? (Not asking sarcastically, I really want to know). I honestly thought the definition of a feminist was somebody who cares about gender equality and cares about the problems facing women .

You should educate yourself more then. Because it's true. You think you are being clever but you're actually being aggressively combative. Your attitude is that you know everything there is to know, and you aren't open to being wrong or learning anything. It makes a person such as me happy to allow you to believe you are 100% correct and let you on your merry way.

You're speaking legally. Confining this to a legal argument is chosing the terms of a battle. Legally, there isn't much i can think of. If I were to reach, I might say "the right to buy personal care products without being overchanged unnecessarily compared to other comparable products"

Yes, I always hear about toxic masculinity (which I believe is a real problem) being blamed on men themselves (which i absolutely do not agree with in any way)

A thousand times yes. I think the idea of a privilege free society of human being that AREN'T lobotomized is impossible. You can only put systems in place (like appeal boards/panels , laws, etc. all of which I see happening more than more) to ensure that people who ARE treated unfairly have recourse. I don't see how wagging your finger at a group and accusing them of being willfully hurtful helps anybody

Wow dude. Really smart arguments there, thank you. (It's hard not to sound sarcastic on the internet, but i swear I'm being sincere !) Very insightful! I definitely have tried to describe how it makes me feel and i get an additional response to that (I should have included this in my original post): that any emotional statement is the result of a pathetic and fragile male ego. The toxic attitude that it's invalid for my feelings to be hurt, because i belong to a privileged group. This is at the …

If you want to get down to brass tacks and talk like grown ups, i like that. So I'll respond to this as one. Your very initial reply contained WAY more bitchy attitude than you're being accountable for. My single word reply to that could have been taken a number of ways , but even if you presume what I meant , it wasn't enough to warrant attacking my ability to find love. You escalated it because you couldnt see how you participated in the hostility. This latest reply is a continuation of placin…

I stand by the fact that I am more privileged than a white woman in the same situation as me. I feel this way because I have witnessed (and defended against) boys club comments, mentality, and hiring decisions being made in the workplace based on gender alone. It's still a problem. I feel women suffer financially from unnecessary "pink tax" in many areas. The list goes on. However, what i think we agree on is that white male privilege isn't a problem created solely by white males. It's created b…

I agree with most of what you said and also believe the patriarchy is at worst, complete bullshit, and at the very best, an exaggeration of societal problems that both genders participated in allowing and creating. I don't agree that as a white male, I'm not privileged. I struggle with poverty etc but it's because of my ex wife, bad decisions, and other factors. I'm not being passed over because of how I look. But just because I'm privileged doesn't mean i support a white male patriarchy and I w…

Yeah, I'm not a man hating feminist, I am a "both genders should be equal" feminist. I believe it is 100% true that there are equality problems facing women that need urgent addressing, but that doesn't mean men are to blame alone and it definitely doesn't mean men don't deserve equality too and that men have urgent equality issues too (esp in abuse and family law departments). Talk to academic feminists, people who actually study this stuff. They don't hate on men, they want to partner with men…
