Yes, of course the total hermit population is larger than the observed hermit population, but there is no reason to suggest that the gendered trend would be any different. Do you think they review literally every relevant person when they formulate statistics? All 8 billion of them? No, they just use a reasonably large sample group.

Very hard to be a true outcast as a woman, you get so much mirth just virtue of being born female, not to mention people don't inherently fear you, and find you more approachable. If you are shy or anxious you will get dragged into the light, being a shy man is a social death sentence. Of the true hermits i have seen in my life, 95% of them have been men.
