So is this your advice for finance or for women? Just wanted to be sure I understood you correctly.

Right makes sense. I said we were doing dessert at 8:30pm though, which is clear, but agreed it could be clearer. I do struggle to think how I could make this that much more clear without sounding like a dick. For drinks, I often refer to it as "after-dinner drinks" to emphasize this point, but with dessert saying "after-dinner dessert" sounds awkward because it's not really a term people use. What would you do there?

Totally, agree. When you invite someone on a date, then it's not a gender roles thing, it's a "you invited this person so I should pay thing." It would be strange to invite someone then expect them to pay afterwards. Agreed on drinks. It makes it easy with drinks because you can stop after 1 round. With dinner it's super awkward, because there's no "rounds" like we have with drinks. It's basically the dude will pay 100% of the time. Would you actually say that line for food? I mean I went all th…

Great, point. You're right that I was being defensive. I'll make the link clearer in the future.

the trivium method What do you mean by the trivium method here?

Haha, I'm learning too, so not really saying I know that much. I don't claim at all to be an expert, but rather an eager beginner. (1) It's very budget dependent, so find someone that makes a similar amount as you but dresses extremely well and ask them "where should I shop?" For someone that was very cheap like me, it's helpful to always ask the question of "how long will this item last me and what's the per year or per occaision cost of this item?" (e.g., H&M, Zara and Uniclo have the appearan…

Not sure how this is a productive comment. I've done plenty of that, but it isn't particularly relevant in making the point I wanted here. I think you're assuming I am writing this post to brag, when really I am doing it to come to a better theoretical understanding with the TRP community. I mention my wealth simply because I'm an extreme case that helps elucidate a particular theoretical point.

Yeah agreed. Slightly obscured is better, but not showing at all is the worst way of going about it.

How else do people know you traveled on a dating app? I'm being dead serious. You can talk about it, but from A/B tests of profiles with and without the corresponding pictures I actually don't think this works well.

Lol ok point taken. I am a bit Scroogey but likely because I grew up in a thoroughly middle class family with grandparents that were dirt poor during the Great Depression. Agreed this mindset is something I should let go of given what my life actually is.

I like it. Good advice, thanks.

This is true. I actually do not use social media for this reason. You also cannot buy a Rolex as a young person for this reason or be involved in excessively wild parties. I mean you can, but it just means you'll have a short career. You have to have a lot of discretion.

Haha, I wish. Most high finance people get married young because they are usually very traditional and type A (eg, lets just get the marriage thing off our to do list). The typical financier is too risk averse to hire hookers. You want your financiers to be like this honestly, most of them are actually very responsible with large amounts of money. They're very beta and not at all like Wolf of Wall Street. Movies are not real life.

Haha, for me bourgeoisie is an insult and it isn't really a reference to Karl Marx. It just means that it's something a shallow wealthy person does to have the appearance of a live well lived. I'm not a Marxist, I'm just someone that's skeptical of spending too much (many of my coworkers have been trapped in finance by getting married to or growing up in a family with expensive habits, which sounds like a circle of hell to me). I use this term because the reality is that I've always been deeply …

Very good point. The problem I face is that I can never know. Are there ways of knowing? If so, feel free to share insights. I always hoped that women would be attracted to success because it conveys a certain set of masculine virtues. For me, this implies "it was for the right reasons." The problem is i actually think that this is rare and I'm not sure if I've ever met someone attracted to me for these reasons. It could be because I'm actually not good at anything else in life other than financ…

great point, but how do you walk the line between arrogance and displaying wealth in a respectable and attractive way? Ex) One day I am getting drinks with a girl and I thought "I wonder what will happen if I make reference to my wealth indirectly." I did not know, because I had never been wealthy before. But I got my first bonus, so I began to wonder: will she react differently if I make reference to it? I told her about how I caught my boss shopping for Porches while on a call with a client, a…

Great point. But how do you implement this advice? to be clear, nobody lives like the Wolf of Wall Street, especially people that work in high finance. We do have actually insane events probably twice a year, but it's a bit of a faux pas to actually be crazy there, to take too many photos, or to post these photos in a dating profile. How do you recommend finding out about and going to these exclusive events you mentioned? Sometimes I'll get bottle service with friends but that's hardly something…

Yes, this. What matters is getting a DSLR and a friend that knows how to use one. Photography is a great hobby because it has a very low learning curve relative to other types of visual art, but it has a high SMV uplift relative to the effort you have to put in. Especially in a social media influenced world, it's very useful. My plan is to offer to take photos for other people that I know take a lot of photos and see if they reciprocate. Most people that are photographers used to really piss me …

Thanks for the reply, especially given the similar background. Sounds like we've arrived at similar conclusions. I actually worked for one of the elite boutiques in the same range as you mentioned in one of their best groups. You're absolutely correct: girls are more impressed by my roommate at XYZ bulge bracket in the back office making $40k a year, which is painful but true (it doesn't help that his parents help him out a lot so he LOOKS just as wealthy as me vs. my parents don't give me a cen…

I've personally noticed that a nice wardrobe has a larger and more cost effective effect on dating than other factors (granted the factors I was using before were really dumb) By far the dumbest is paying for doing anything with a girl, which gets you almost nowhere. I used to buy them drinks and it didn't appear to improve the funnel at all. I thought "this is a display of SMV" but this is actually an exception to the general "what they see is all there is" principle. I do think it displays wea…

Yeah, I totally agree. There's an "optimal point" though that probably balances the need to save but also the need to display wealth. There's probably a curve surrounding those if you are too far on one side of the tradeoff or another. I think I was on the wrong side before (e.g., spending far too little).

Why is this necessarily a one-way road to BetaBuxdom? I agree on the meal prep idea though. I actually have heavily considered this because it falls under the general category of transmuting wealth into physical attractiveness (presumably by making it easier to become fit, given time constraints).

Great advice, thanks sunshine. I have several travel photos, but I want to add other bourgeoise-hobby photos. These have the same effect as the "fancy toy" photos, but for a rather odd reason they are totally socially acceptable in our culture. The difference appears to be that any bourgeoise hobby that requires some degree of skill or "culture" (e.g., skiing, boating, horse racing, art appreciation) is generally well-received. The added benefit is that doing these things is generally enjoyable …

How do you recommend I better internalize this? I actually came from the least wealthy family out of most of the people that I work with, so the idea of wealth is very new to me for the last 3-4 years. It's actually very tough to change social classes, precisely because "acting wealthy" is not the same as "being wealthy". I'm trying to internalize it without also making money my master (this is the benefit to not being born into wealth in my view). Let me know if any advice there.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
