This is a great question. And one that I wish I would’ve asked when my divorce started. I was completely caught off guard. My ex already had an attorney. And I had three days to respond. Plus, it was Fourth of July weekend. I did some searches and try to find someone who could see me on such short notice — that was the hard part. Eventually had to settle for someone who had decent reviews, but it was a cluster fuck. He was a total wimp. He didn’t stand up for me. He didn’t fight my ex-wife’s sle…

I know that your situation sucks, but how did you get some much time with your kids. All winter break, all summer break and spring break? I want that. We’re headed for mediation in March and I need to know how to get the most out of it!

Whoa. I’m in the middle of a Washington state divorce and it is a nightmare. I’m in Kitsap County and my lawyer is super crappy, but I’m in the hole for nearly $20,000 so far with no end in sight. I can’t afford another lawyer and another retainer. I’m stuck with this guy who has very little initiative and no balls. I thought that since Washington was a progressive state the judges would put more value on the father’s relationship and that I’d get a fairer deal. Of the case. Let me know if you w…

This describes my 17 years of marriage to my STBX. Somehow when I told her how I felt it made her feel invalidated. Not long ago a friend shared the JADE acronym with me (originally from AL-ANON). When dealing with someone who tends toward the circular arguments (like my wife), do not: justify, argue, defend or explain. I did all of these repeatedly throughout my marriage. Not wonder it was so messed up. I eventually didn’t own version of this, I stopped caring and went deep inside myself and al…

I didn’t have an attorney after calling 19 different attorneys. The whole thing lasted less than 7 minutes. The judge asked me if I agreed with her requests. I got to speak for about 20 seconds. She gave my X everything she asked for. Totally sucked. I have an attorney now. Hoping I can light a fire under him to challenge that ruling and up the ante for my X. She was married to a very passive man but she’s now dealing with someone who is wholly committed to fighting this and now has the time to …

I completely understand where you’re coming from. It’s been almost 6 months since my wife said she wanted a divorce and I’m still reeling from it. Since we have kids, my STBXW and I have to communicate and see each other frequently. Spending time with here is hard, especially when she is being nice, kind or friendly to me. I get confused and see that kindness as love. It isn’t. She’s done. It’s over. There is nothing I can do the change my reality. Every day I have to wake up and accept my reali…
