Boundary pushing is always wrong and never flattering. The first push is annoying, then it's a giant red flag waving in your face that he doesn't respect you whatsoever and thinks your boundaries are negotiable.

I'm so glad that you saw him for who he was and left that relationship! A man who has been in therapy does not equal a healed or healthy man. His emotional regulation is/was not your responsibility whatsoever. It's his responsibility to handle his own reactions to his triggers and to self-soothe and seek professional support where necessary...not your responsibility. Tell him that you want to keep things strictly professional and not go beyond being mentor/mentee. I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. As a woman, I absolutely hate this kind of opener. If a guy comes to me and asks me a question about where blah blah is and then doesn't proceed in going to that place/following through with what I told them, it just feels creepy and very manipulative.
