I learned this somewhere and can confirm it works from field testing, try this: ask her name and don't offer your own. If she is interested in you and continuing the conversation, she'll ask your name. It's an IOI.

The thing is, I don't understand what she would be doing at a bar hanging with guys like me if she wasn't single. Also, she was there with a friend. Wouldn't that friend have interfered if she was in relationship?

I see your point. When I used the openers last night, I did them 5 to 10 minutes into a set. If the conversation was going stale for a moment, it was the perfect tool to revitalize the interaction.
