I am as direct as it comes in college. I say things like "you're very cute/gorgeous/extremely pretty." And most of the time i don't even bother and just plop down next to a girl and say "Hi, whats your name?" I don't think i get the creepy pick up guy reputation, I get the "big flirt" rep though; never a bad thing. being direct diffuses you from being creepy. However, using opinion openers and other indirect stuff is v.creepy.
