Yeah, you're not getting it. The difference between block parties and private businesses is one is operating for the need to profit. Community centers where communities are active are still full Speculation. Nobody wants to pay for anything or support anything they arent personally interested in Again, it's this individualistic, me me me, mentality that just keeps you from thinking outside of yourself and what's good for the community. What if we took that same attitude with schools? Just becaus…

Again, we're going back to this black/white do they or do they not exist. That's not the issue. The issue there are LESS of them so when you point to the few things that do exist, you're not taking into account into account whats existed in the past vs what exists today. You're looping. The thing is people want stuff to exist just for the sake of it, nobodys going to fund activities that nobody shows up to. No, people want these places to exist for the sake of fostering community and it's precis…

You're not listening. Their argument wasn't that there are absolutely NO 3rd places but that there's been a reduction in them because of societal/economic systems that incentivize for profit ventures rather than public goods but you keep reducing this to simply personal choice when you can't choose your way out of that. Also, you're complaining about people complaining.

Ok but you're trading personal anecdotes happening on an individual basis when they're talking about something occuring at the societal level.

I actually talk to women. When you're young, you do a lot of stupid things to get their attention, it's not until much later that you realize you don't know what they want. It's like when girls obsess over their thighs spilling over their thigh high, most men LOVE that but to women that's a huge source of insecurity. Men have that too.

Women are attracted to things about men that men don't even realize. Whatever your idea of an "attractive male" is, you have a closer crossover with gay males than with women. That's not meant to be an insult.

It's the fault of the app developers Capitalism. It's capitalism. You're a commodity.

This is about confidence. People that don't like themselves don't have confidence that others will like them. If you don't have that, you come off as needy and desperate.

No body was arguing about women choosing whatever they like. Like What? The thread started with this: Women aren't overwhelmingly the ones crying here over not having partners. To which you took offense because crying is a valid emotion, which it is if we're talking about it in a vacuum but we're not. Clearly. Who cares who they choose? The dumb ones are going to choose hedonism and the smart ones are going to marry their Mr bigs. The arrogant and stupid ones are going to keep playing their leve…

Superior gender? Who says that? That's just you projecting your own inferiority complex. Nobody's telling you not to cry, they're telling you not to cry about women making their own autonomous decisions because it makes you look like a child. You denigrate yourself.

Men crying because girls won't sleep with them is called having a tantrum.

This is just sounds like baggage. I don't care. These are social issues and you can't address social issues through some individual choice to be non-monogamous.

Monogamy is just one of many cascading effects which we inherited from previous dominating patriarchal systems. I mentioned Wilhelm Reich earlier, he's a really good read especially his work on Fascism. I also recommend Esther Perel, HIGHLY, she writes about relationships and did a really good history on monogamy and infidelity and has a lot of stuff on YT. Check them out.

I'm not trying to "enlighten" people out of monogamy but rather point out how these systems create the conditions of our own alienation and which reinforces them.

I agree but if we're comparing the different tight-knit structures of communities, which do you think would be more "integrated?"

I'm skeptical of it because it's hard to falsify post hoc rationalizations, nevertheless, individual behavior/collective customs are unquestionably subject to evolutionary pressures. Non-monogamous families might be having more kids than their counterparts leading to future over representation. Could that leave a genetic imprint? Maybe but even if it doesn't, just being exposed to those norms is enough to repeat them. Memetics and all that. But don't you think that environmental and other extern…

I agree, that's true, but the average length of a marriage is something like 7 years which is about the same age that kids become less dependent. I'm usually pretty skeptical of evolutionary psychology but it makes sense that that's when we lose interest each other, after those vulnerable years, but over a lifetime that's like 4-5 partners while you're viable, multiple kids maybe, you get a much more closer knitting than just traditional monogamy.

In what way? Personally, I view monogamy and by extension nuclear families as being inherently alienating which sits at the opposite end of more open communally integrated family structures, 'takes a village' and all that.

I agree with that to a degree. As a political movement, it's completely right. There's a Hitler speech, which I could never find, where he basically lays it all out for a bunch wealthy industrialists and how they're gonna stop these "Cultural Bolsheviks." Definitely reactionary. However, I think this is something that's always been there, something that society nurtured as it passed from one type of authoritarian patriarchal structure into the next. Monogamy might've evolved to support one type …

How do you feel about Hannah Arendt's definition? I find the way that she parses left/right fits perfectly with Reich. Beyond that, I don't really fascism too seriously as a political philosophy and actually do consider it to be completely reactionary with the same constant romanticization of a past they never knew, scapegoating outgroups, ect.
/r/PurplePillDebate11/07/23 09:08 PM

I think that applies nicely. Are you familiar with Wilhelm Reich? He wrote The Sexual Revolution in 60s and also The Mass Psychology of Fascism. Basically he asserts that fascism starts with sex and patriarchal family structures that then reinforces authoritarian patriarchal politics which reinforces those same family structures creating a reinforcing feedback loop.

People are actually way less promiscuous. Beyond that, the western idea of "traditional monogamy" is actually relatively new. Traditional monogamy used to mean one person for the rest of your life, not one person at a time. The reason for this even became institutionalized was so that the rich could consolidate land and power by marrying of their children without their consent (read: human trafficking) to other rich families and produce heirs, this why the European aristocracy is so inbred. Marr…
