Ahahah what a nice coincidence. We do have a considerable Portuguese diaspora in Canada I've heard.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates02/04/25 04:28 PM

For context I'm Portuguese and living near our capital. I'd argue that on an ideal world demand + complexity would lead to better salaries and conditions but that is sadly not always the case in a lot of the world.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates02/04/25 03:39 PM

"Demanding jobs= high compensation. That’s how you get people to do it." In an ideal world yeah but that's not exactly true. Police officers, nurses, health technicians and teachers for example get payed awfully around here. And those are demanding and very much essential professions.

A Bi(sexual) trans man. The dude just missed the space key.

Yeah well, I'd agree those would be some good examples of anti feminism and internalised misandry or sexism.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates30/11/23 04:20 PM

Why is both feminism and anti feminism connected to misandry? If anything, radical anti feminism would be linked to misogyny no?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates30/11/23 01:46 PM

I get annoyed too. It's not that I don't think toxic masculinity doesn't exist, but clearly the expression is overused nowadays and most of the time quite unfairly.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates02/08/23 12:46 PM

Honestly? I'd say it depends on your circumstances and who you are. In a very general basis I would say hobbies, fitness, learning skill and developing interests. It's hard to tell but that's generally a good start. I'd also highly recommend therapy for self discovery and for the sake of your well being, loneliness takes quite a toll. So who are you buddy? Where are you in life right now and where do you want to be?

If anything I get the feeling no one really gives a fuck and that I'm expected to shut up and be happy.

With things like loosing the right to abortion happening in the 21st century that's a very bad faith point. Why the need to trash on women's struggles? Is it not the main point to want everyone's issues to be heard and discussed?
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates03/08/22 11:03 AM
3

Not necessarily. But it should be done on men's terms I think, I'm sure we would all want a broader range of acceptable forms of masculinity. That's a big part of being a men's advocate. Definitely it shouldn't be a matter of all masculinity being bad though, that's for sure.

I'm training 5 days a week (martial arts) and I'm not looking like a fitness model (which seems to be people's definir of being in shape)... I'd be needing to add gym training, running, diet cutting phases and possibly supplements. How exactly does that sound "easy"?
/r/PurplePillDebate02/02/22 09:38 AM

I think the problem lies not in sexualisation but in objectification. The latter implies dehumanising someone.

That's an interesting take.

I'm with you, I really don't like it. I like us to act and be treated as equals.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates15/10/21 08:01 AM

That's the thing though. It's not just simply the act of sex that's the problem for incels. Otherwise they would do just that. It's about intimacy, self esteem, being validated and desired. It's about people feeling lost and not learning how to socialize or fit in properly. In my opinion, those are topics worthy of attention and reflection.
/r/MensRights16/09/21 01:30 PM

Hope they decide to talk about mental health, self esteem and male sexuality as well. Regardless of what the incel group is or does, it exists because there's a lot of pain and suffering out there. There's a cause for the existence of groups like these and people need adequate and healthy responses instead of just being brushed of and getting no support.
/r/MensRights16/09/21 01:29 PM

Lazy writing for the sake of representation. I've seen a lot of feminists complaining about this phenomenon too. It's a lot better to just get new fully developed characters and stories.

How is women having to go through this awful thing funny or even something related to men's rights? It's bloody disgusting and a huge step backward for women.

From the moment you do something out of tradionalism or traditional expectations, not out of your personal choice of action, you are perpetuating norms. From the moment you call out that society goes back to traditional roles, you have an issue. By definition you'd have two forces: conservative and progressive. Conservative thought restricts into a status quo while progressive thought, by definition, should broaden personal choice and ways of living. Again, I'm critising specifically call outs t…
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/08/21 01:12 PM
6

Yes but you are aware of systemic traditional expectations. It's a bit ironic having people complain about men and alimony while advocating we go back to traditional roles. I see this a lot and it's really not helping. We're not talking about personal choice here, we're talking about advocating for the norm to be the old ways. This has happened more than once.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/08/21 12:53 PM
7

Yes, which is why going back to the good ol'fashioned list doesn't make much sense. This debate is tricky, but one thing is for sure: The status quo and traditional values are for the most part mononormative. Advocating for going backwards is not something we should allow.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/08/21 11:56 AM
9

In my opinion we should separate individual choice from call outs for a societal normalisation. The latter is something I actively fight against. The traditional paradigm is one of the largest culprit for a lot of the issues we face as men and women. It's a slippery slope. If we make a list of what is expected of men traditionally, we can easily see that a lot of them represent the vast majority of issues being discussed in male advocacy spaces.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/08/21 11:46 AM
14

I've noticed this a lot too. And I've also noticed lot of people wanting to go back to traditional roles in reaction to feminism, especially in MRA spaces. It's bloody annoying and quite frankly very harmful for men's rights. Men need progress, not going back to their hold roles and limitations.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates26/08/21 10:21 AM

Question is, why would the long hair be relevant other than for sexist norms? Shouldn't a man be allowed to use long or short hair as he pleases? Long haired women or girls are no longer a concern when it comes to safety issues? We should question and fight these restrictive norms.
/r/MensRights24/08/21 10:46 AM
6

He's just a young boy with long curly hair... There's no make up or agenda. If we're advocating for men's rights we are advocating for men and boys being able to look however the fuck they want... How is she dressing up the boy as a girl? What does the kid want to use? It's about freedom most of all. And if there's one thing I've heard a lot when growing up is that "long hair is for girls". It's sexist and annoying.
/r/MensRights24/08/21 10:39 AM
7

And this isn't exactly hard to realize looking at some TERF literature... Can't remember the author, and really don't quote me on this, but I've read something in the lines of a "MTF person is appropriating the female body and womanhood itself".
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates20/08/21 01:11 AM

Societal behaviour is reproduced by all of those who actively engage in it without questioning, that's everyone regardless of their gender. This applies to most societal issues I'd say.

Dude... Look at what you're saying here. Do you think it's fair to just lash out on a whole gender based on societies issues? Men and women suffer from sexism and really shitty problems. We can't just go on a fuck all men or fuck all women line of thought. That's just madness.

I don't think FDS can even align with feminist principles. They are very anti pornography, they advise women to hold out on having sex and enforce quite a few traditional gender role stereotypes or dynamics. Wouldn't surprise me that FDS have issues with more liberal waves of feminism. It's just a girl power kind of guise with very retrograde visions of gender dynamics. It's not really empowering anyone.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates09/08/21 03:24 PM

Just do what feels right for you. Haters gonna hate and people will talk shit regardless. I've been called a white knight for defending women's issues, problematic for defending men's issues. At the end of the day I can't control others, I can only keep fighting or advocating for what I think is right. That pick me insult is kinda like the white knight one. Its annoying but doesn't matter as long as you are aware of who you are and what you are trying to achieve.

Because a lot of people think that it's a zero sum game. Either you are completely privileged or oppressed, no in betweens. Lack of awareness, mixing men's issues discussions with pure reactionaries. Atitudes of machismo or hyper masculinity also look down on men expressing concerns. This is also a minority but there's the reasoning that sexism against men is impossible. Then the idea that the end of the patriarchy would automatically end any gendered issues or unbalances. I think it's a matter …

It means being whatever I want to, and aspire to be. My values, my body, the way I carry myself and my sexualisation. It's not a crystal clear idea though... I ponder this a lot. My gender, my "manliness" and what is simply my personality, beliefs and values.

Because feminism specializes and focuses in women's issues. And that's why men's rights movements are also really really necessary.

A different perspective, equality in getting shit is not the type of equality we want. I don't want men to be forced into military service, into killing. I don't women to go through that either. War is hell, pitting men against men and offering misery to everyone for the interest of the few. If we are speaking about the draft, it should simply end. No one should be forced into the military. If women are now being forced into it, it's only logical feminists (being advocates for women's issues) to…

Your reply to gay men's rights was the most idiotic thing I've heard. Do you realize there are still conservative nations that by law discriminate and penalize homossexuality? Look at what happened in Hungary for god's sake. And you come out with a bullshit blank statement on something that affects all men by default. How am I supposed to take any of this seriously? Speak for yourself, tradionalism and conservative attitudes are one of the biggest reasons we have the problems we have. I want men to be free from those shackles, therefore that's easily one of the biggest enemies out there. The thing about feminism is that it focused on women's liberation. It's not mainly focused on men. So what are we going to do? Whine about feminism or actually get our heads thinking on men's issues and going out there doing something? This mindset is part of the problem, t…

I can see the "sons" expression being touchy around here. I'd have zero remarks if the word was children instead. But the message most of all isn't wrong. It's a shitty world when people worry more about their kids being homossexual than them being shitty human beings. On a side note, gay rights being mens rights should be a men's rights advocate concern as well.

From what I've seen sex education is mostly awful or non existing all across the globe. And again it's really important, be it about safe sex, etiquette and consent. We have had educations on STDs, which considerably improved things and even so it is lacking. This is a win win for everyone. How can more awareness and education be bad?
/r/MensRights09/07/21 10:40 PM

Teaching kids proper sex education, boundaries, consent and healthy relationships is awfully needed. Teach your sons not to rape just sounds hateful and carries a very negative message for boys...

Not necessarily. The depictions of idealised bodies changed, for both men and women. There was a huge focus on the male body more so than the female body. There are trends regarding this.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates09/07/21 10:29 AM

Not in general and not all types of men. Could be one of the big reasons plenty of men have self-esteem issues and zero clue on their attractiveness. Society does not celebrate the average male body as it does with women. Go back to ancient Greece and you will see the evidence of a completely different trend.

It is a last resort measure for phimosis or paraphimosis for example. Recommended by many European studies ONLY as a last resort when other treatments are not possible and by pondering the risks carefully. I'm just saying because the whole "it's not about you" or "you should just acknowledge this is bigger than you" is about the same kind of thing I see. Could be wrong but this is my take. It's not about ignoring the problems, it's about how we transmit the message.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/06/21 08:00 PM

Indeed. But understand the context, what about people who needed it or had it done willingly? Should I just insist they are mutilated? It's not as simple in my opinion.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/06/21 07:41 PM
2

Context: I'm European. I think that medical community mostly says that it's a last resort thing for very specific conditions. Regardless, we need to tackle things carefully and with tact. If someone says they had it done to them and they are ok with it you wouldn't ramble on how he is mutilated no? Cultural normalization of an unnecessary procedure, without consent, is wrong. Being pressured to it is wrong. Doing circumcisions in cold blood, unwillingly and in bad conditions is wrong. The way we…

Some people get it as a medical procedure you know. It's considered a last resort thing but it can happen... It would be a better comparison to go tell an amputee how awful it is to have your leg mutilated and how it is inhumane. This is a tricky topic.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/06/21 04:53 PM

Another tricky topic, the balance between fighting unnecessary circumcision practices and not shaming men who had it.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates23/06/21 11:50 AM

While the end goal might have changed, the message is pretty much the same. A dismissive gendered slur daring you to conform to a certain set of expectations. Mind you it really depends on the context.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates18/06/21 01:10 PM

So most of the talk was based on assuming the MRA wants this to be a VS women's rights thing. When will people understand that it's not a zero sum game. Multiple causes, multiple problems and all deserve attention.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates17/06/21 05:12 PM
4

Even so, and just by making a case from a women's perspective. You are loosing on a lot of potential good matches by confirming to these old fashioned roles. I figure that if things were more equal we'd have a lot less undesired approaches, frustration and even less shaming by normalizing women approaching. Breaking these shackles is good for both men and women. I just don't get it.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates11/06/21 02:34 PM
7

I never really got to this sort of mindset. Even from a feminist perspective, if you are fighting for equal rights and sexual freedom why would you let yourself be stuck on a passive role? Seems counter productive... Doesn't help anyone at all.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates11/06/21 08:25 AM
3

Our society is made of all kinds of people, and I suppose that in theory anyone who doesn't make a conscious effort to counter the stereotypes and issues ends up contributing to keep them alive. In short, some men and some women cause those issues. But the problem are the issues themselves, I don't think it's productive to be playing the blame game. Saying that only men create male issues in my opinion is discarding women's responsibility and agency in our society.
/r/LeftWingMaleAdvocates06/06/21 12:43 PM

If I recall correctly, it was initially used to describe condescending speech that made assumptions based on gender. IE: A guy assuming a woman wouldn't know anything about cars and trying to explain things on a condescending tone. I think nowadays this term is being thrown around randomly.

I'm familiar with the argument that "all you need for an equalitarian society is feminism". The simple retort to that is "what has feminism done about X, y and z?". No need for wars or whatever. Quite frankly that feels unnecessary, wrong most of the times and unproductive. MRAs would also benefit a lot on having more academic perspectives and theory in the mix. Rise above is what I say, live and let live. Those are my 5 cents on the thing.
/r/MensRights23/02/21 04:07 PM
-3

My point, fuck the naysayers. To the people trying to tear it down I say "if you aren't helping at least move out of the way". I think that rising above petty wars and having a strong independant stance can only be helpful. Fighting fire with fire leads to nothing good. Besides, what's more important? Men's rights or reacting to feminism? I know what I'm choosing.
/r/MensRights23/02/21 03:55 PM

Not all of us despise it. In my opinion, people are free to criticize the movements and the world views. When done right it can be good for the sake evolving the arguments. At the end of the day, if done right, both movements should co-exist and support each other. When it comes to MRA I think people should stop trying to be reactionary or riding the back of feminism for acceptance. There's a just cause to represent here, let's create our very own thing.

On the topic of men and feelings, to be honest society is asking us to open up while at the same time dismissing or judging us for doing so. Opening up normally results in apathy, dismissing your feelings or having people distance themselves from you. We live in a sexist society, everyone is getting shit for it.

I'm pretty sure women have had to, and still deal with, a lot of shit. Sexism exists, we all get affected by it. That is not the way.

An eye for an eye just leaves the world blind. If you replace old taboos with new ones you aren't fighting for equality, you're just shifting the power elsewhere.

Tips on how to stop raping women? Telling a rapist not to rape? This is just a sassy, useless piece of info. To a person who actually is capable of raping someone I'm quite positive they don't give two shits about rape being bad or being told not to rape. And that sub is just a cesspool of toxic behaviour. Just check the comments.

So we have agreement on the first part. And I would assume that if you are knowledgeable on feminism that you are aware of many divergent types of feminist ideals, including some very toxic views be it for men or women. My only major disagreement on the common normal feminist is when it comes to men's issues. As in feminism tends to focus on women and there is space for a co-existing male focused movement. As for your views on incels I would have to disagree. I come from a place of understanding…

You can admit to women being oppressed without ignoring men's issues. And those are very blatant examples of oppression. We are taking about seriously flawed laws and cultural standards. But I'll give you an argument that the men's rights movement should pay attention to many neglect realities.

Agreed with the feminism part, with awareness that ,to some extent, we do know there are multiple types of feminists and sadly some radical voices are borderline misandrist (many TERFs come to mind). On the other hand, incels should be considered a broad gender neutral thing. And despite there being undeniable toxic voices, on the general picture we have a attention worthy fenomenum that warranting professional aid and empathy.

I'm pretty sure that's sarcasm and not exactly related to feminism. You can raise criticism on the movement or some views, for sure. But I'm sorry to say that this kind of content doesn't hold much value. People need focus on men's issues instead of simply reacting to feminist movements.

It highly depends on the context I would say. I've heard the phrase for innocent things and I've also seen it used to excuse shitty behaviour. It's not an umbrella term for all that's bad for sure.

If you're unwell, and if you feel like you're spiraling out of control, get some help. Try and find a good therapist, talk about what bothers you and start taking care of your well being with that help. Venting is alright and needed. Whining and not doing anything won't get you far. Start somewhere and make it a smart start. Therapy would likely be the right start.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
