In Stranger Things the cop guy, who is a father figure to the superhero girl, was a very positive character, though.

Any good scientific or pop scientific readings on gender/sex and maturity?

Yes! Thanks for this, obviously that’s the example.

To counter argue — sucker punch is one thing, exerting continuous physical dominance is another. The latter requires greater physical prowess. But yes, I’m not an expert on any of these issues, and I know that I’m arguing against one of the male advocates claims. Just curious, personally, and intellectually in how these questions can be approached.

Maybe. I don’t know. But you know the cultural trope I’m referring to? Seemingly “alpha” husband controlled by the wife and/or mother? So many shows like I don’t know, the Sopranos used to be about this stuff.

A couple of years back, I laughed at people who read them. To my sophomorically intellectual mind, reading anything other than philosophy was for fools - or a chore. But there’s a gap of understanding between them — they address different questions in life. Philosophy won’t address the behavioral questions, the good kind at least doesn’t say much about how to navigate relationships, not get exploited, achieve success, be the person who is and seems attractive to most. Maybe these are not worthy …

I think it fetishizes an activity which should be one aspect of a fulfilling life. There are others, too. He admits it was escapism from his problems, from being in love with someone far away; he did not work them through, though. He recommends this as the medicine. And yet, you have so many jacked guys with mental problems, including extremely low self esteem. Look around on Reddit or this sub. Perpetuating that gym is THE ONLY answer is wrong — it’s part of a bigger picture. Neither a calling,…

I agree — the struggles will not magically disappear, but physical exercise is one of the most beneficial things one can do on the daily basis to function better. As for the latter — yes. I look at TRP with distance, but the core of the sub’s message is the basic self-help people need to face their struggles. Clearly a voice that many need — also, to be able to evaluate, later on, what parts do or don’t fit their philosophy. Taking down subs, pushing people away, being exclusionary — towards peo…

You’re 20. In many ways, transitioning from childhood to manhood. This is very much normal. Now, the obvious boxes to check: Diet, training. Go for medical check ups, too. Not necessarily gym - a team sport would be even better. Being goal oriented, on a career/academic path. Don’t cut out the pleasurable activities, but they need to be only a part of the day. Reading psychological (not red pill) literature. To understand what’s what. Opening up to a circle of friends - and/or building it. You c…

I literally watched a film like this yesterday. It’s called “somebody I used to know”. (Not very good but demonstrates Alison Brie is still hot — I think this was the purpose of this picture). Anyway, hard to believe how “innocently” toxic the whole plot was - and how we were to empathize with the protagonist.

I don’t like this piece. I think this sounds a little mentally, emotionally crippled, tbh.

Aristocrats were never useful in the slavish sense. A common man to be worthy must be useful. A man who is above it, doesn’t need to be anything. This isn’t meant to detract from your message — I think it’s…useful — but not the whole view. (Please no semantic disagreements re usefulness, I’m making a clear enough point.)

Thank you. Do you not miss “proper” relationships? Or, alternatively, do you regret having had them when younger?

Haha. Good for you. I’m saying that I couldn’t do that for long. Maybe it’s my personality, upbringing, or different expectations — I just cannot connect easily now and I feel like it’s only going to get worse with time.

I’m sure I will meet women from even higher social circles than now. But it’s already the top however many percent - Ivy League schools, good prospects, and all.

Thank you, this is a great reply. Where that can come back to bite you is when you settle for a woman in her early or mid-30s, only to find that her markers of stability and maturity that you found attractive were also an adopted persona Absolutely. Indeed, I’ve had that happen to me several times. When the facade drops and vulnerability together with personality issues, traumas, etc., emerge from underneath. As for the last para — Well, right now I’m not looking for a real connection, because I…

It’s for the same reason someone who hasn’t lost their weight yet will not buy nice clothes & enjoy life at large. Or someone who hasn’t gotten the yet another promotion at work will not go for vacation. Or how guys will not approach girls or allow things to escalate.

If they have little to do or talk about together boxing isn’t going to cut it. And if he can’t joke around or hold a convo, then him motorcycling isn’t it either.

Surface level frame is easy to achieve. Become a well rounded Man is where the real work starts. Yes. And one of the main issues with TRP is that it skews the image of what an attractive man is. Ie interesting, fun to be around, who reads, what chess films, whatever. And by being focused solely on one’s career, gym, etc., it’s easy to become shallow and have little to say. But the bigger problem with TRP is that it presents people as objects, projects evaluated on a scale. Which can lead to the …

There’s dogmatism, there are bubbles, radical takes, but there’s also being detached from reality to such an extent that any talk with someone from the outside of your group is impossible. Nice talking to ya.

I don’t know if you’re unable to engage in good faith or actually are so intellectually rigid but either way, we have nothing to talk about. I really think it’s a shame this is the dominant voice here. Oh well.

You wanted me to write up an ontology of mens rights radicalism but here you’ve provided a perfect case study. If you don’t understand why this is “radical” to a normal, reasonably well educated guy, I don’t think we’ll communicate well.

Do you really not see radicalism in male separatism or even in framing it as a reasonable (as distinct to acceptable, ie allowable) social behavior? Both said separatism and such framing of it is what I meant by radicalism.

I understand that. It’s still a minor cyberspace phenomenon. ‘Feminists’ you meet irl don’t say that. The mainstream of writers does not either. That’s what I meant.

You’re absolutely right. I understand. But regardless of that, the rigidity and hostility or radicalism that I hinted at in the post showed pretty quickly in the comments here. Not sure if my take was so bizarre after all.

See, this is what I meant about the range of topics discussed. As I understand, menslib is not interested just in political and legal rights, but a broader debate. Mensrights is focused more narrowly on rights issues as such. Would, say, discussing muscle dysmorphia fit this sub? If it would, then having a thoughtful discussion is of value, even if it does not lead to ‘rights’ talk.

By radicalism I meant several things but mostly a pretty unified political/ideological stance among users and perhaps being overly focused on some issues. E.g. Menslib will tell you to admit patriarchal entitlement no matter what you ask about, here they’ll caricature mainstream feminism as wanting to kill all men. Neither hyperbole makes centrist users want to engage, I think.

Oh, I think I’ve been clear that I do not agree with the feminist narrative vilifying men. If I was not - this is one of the reasons why I can’t enjoy menslib. However, I’d like there to be a space to discuss issues from a male perspective without taking an overt political/ideological stance on things. Maybe that’s a better phrasing.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
