It's sounds very old-fashioned but I think the best bet for both men and women is to start thinking about settling down early. If you wait too long you'll just be paralysed by all the possibility out there. Commit early, kill the problem before it grows teeth.

Surely the best way to vet someone for relationship potential is to spend time getting to know them before jumping into bed. Having sex immediately is just asking for the p&d.

I think there must be an evolutionary reason too. It makes zero biological sense for a man to permanently let go of a woman he has found sexually satisfying. Always a chance of future offspring, so no point closing that avenue off. For a woman, with a 9 month+ investment at play, it makes perfect sense to abandon an unreliable partner and shift emotions elsewhere.

We live in an effectively polygamous society. Historically such societies have remained stable by shunting single men into warfare. How modern society adapts is anyone's guess.
