It will be awkward it's a weird situation to be in for both you and them and especially with growing technology it makes social interaction less common but if you stay confident and brush off the awkwardness it becomes a very helpful tool

Progress is progress you wouldn't have had any dates or any girls to have sex with if you haven't made a change. It takes more then a year to master something it took me 4 years of going out very week before I got good to the point where I can say if I want a girl to like me I can get her. You don't necessarily have to be super social I've gone to the bar alone plenty of times and only talked to the girl I was interested in but I acted confident and seemed like a fun guy to that girl so she found me attractive. Don't try to act older they can tell right away you're a lot younger and they will always make jokes about it stay confident and be able to joke with them. I have a very similar experience in my life I have no problem hooking up with girls but have never been able to maintain a relationship longer then 2 months my old roommate on the other hand was able to have girls obsess over him even though he was controlling and verbally abusive but i also noticed that the girls that were obsessed with him tended to have lower self esteem and felt they needed to be controlled your friend could be the same it could just be the type of girls he attracts
