My condolences. My old man died when i was 13. I know it hurts buddy, but it gets better with time. Stay strong, take a trip to central America or South East Asia and take your mind off of things. Life keeps going whether you want it or not. Don't fall back.

I was the poster. My 2nd officer passed through the Artic Circle when going to Canada a week before I boarded the vessel. He showed me such pictures. I think the temperature was around -40 as well

ok so I was just an apprentice. I was paid about 1400 usd. But the prospects are HUGE. For example a simple 2nd officer could earn up to 6k USD per MONTH. If we are talking about a Captain one could earn 15k or MORE per MONTH. But getting to the rank of captain is hard work. Usually if you are really dedicated you can reach that at about the age of 36. But I've seen people still being chief officers at the age of 40, it depends on you really, and your dedication and will to advance and travel.

OK so I'm gonna be careful right now so as not to dox myself or anything. I'll just say im not from the USA so I've got no idea how things are there but for me it was a simple process of getting into the specific Maritime Academy. Basically like a college. For the US I feel like there are certain academies you could try joining that could provide you with the opportunity to get a third or second mate diploma. But that's all I know. You could also perhaps try finding a union of Maritime Officers?…

Damn, it's been some time. Time flies by fast indeed. Our navtex and ais consoles were really bad frankly. Had close to none standard message we had to type everything ourselves on the daily and weekly tests. But lets see if I remember it correctly. It should be something like: I read you loud and clear. And afterwards you would receive my Test message iirc.

Nah maybe I didn't phrase it right. Basically we carried processed Iron ore and when we had to transfer new cargo the holds had to be cleaned to accommodate the new one. Basically it was load, sail, unload, prepare cargo hold while sailing to new port for loading. There are whole books on the methods of cargo hold cleaning but that's for another time. Hope I cleared it up for you

Yeah that's one thing I miss frankly. The ship's engine vibrations and being rocked to sleep. I'd give anything to have these two things back. And that's coming from a 20 year old, that can sleep while listening to heavy rock playing at max volume.

Yeah it was a shithole to be frank. Fucking Bulk Carriers and their fucking cargo holds. Cleaning coal and iron ore for 10 hours a day sure does a number on you. I gave up on the merchant maritime since it wasn't my cup of tea. Sure it's liberating and whatnot but, personally, it's not worth it

Well we didnt pass from high danger areas, for example Somalia or Yemen. But still there are certain counter-measures. Specifically barbed wire and spraying the fuckers with high pressure hoses.

Sure thing. That's why I am in this academy. Because honestly It is more of a practical academy, than a university. I'll have a certain job for the foreseeable future. And unless a total collapse happens I won't be out of a job. I'll have money and able to disappear in a single week and never be heard of for the next 6 or so months

Dad died from cancer when I was 14 or so. Mum has been taking care of us, and as a widow she never went after other men. I mean stuff has been hard,always low on money and such. As for a male role model? I suppose my older brother. He is a network engineer and has his own business. Pretty successful. Works out even at the age of 45. I look up to him. Learned the guitar thanks to him, and his advice really set me straight. I was thinking of giving up on life and such but he helped a lot.
