As an indian born and raised I would suggest to not go in rural parts period even the urban parts aren't safe at night. Women alone at night on the road is assumed to be a prostitute. Till the time you don't have your own vehicle you shouldn't be out, public transportation is a big no no at night even there were cases of cab drivers raping women at night so can't really completely trust the cabs too. If you remain in the urban areas you won't have any difficulty but bad areas are really bad.
