External validation is due to cognitive dissonance: you have blind spots where you're not sure you come across to the world the way you think you do. Either overconfidant, underconfidant, lazy and not aware, etc. Once you are able to see yourself the way other people do, there is no more delta to reconcile, and the need for someone else to validate your behavior becomes obsolete because you're not flying blind anymore.
