Men's Right's Groups haven't come together to pass any legislation or anything.

I agree with you. Feminism is specifically for gender equality. My biggest problem with reddit's egalitarians, is that I've never seen an egalitarian group actually accomplish anything. It reminds me of all lives matter.

I definitely would check out bell hooks despite the criticism. Her book 'Feminsm is for Everybody' I think would be a good start, although it's been a while since I read it. Generally, all feminists believe that society has been male dominated, and historically that women have been kept submissive to men. I don't think that it's that men conspired as a group, (although there have definitely been times men have conspired to keep women submissive, like the men that opposed women's voting rights) b…

It's weird naming feminist authors, because books are so subjective. Novels, I'd say Silvia Plath gives a good view into the mind of a woman at a time when women weren't taken seriously. Mary Shelly who wrote Frankenstein is regarded a champion of women's rights. For specifically feminist texts, bell hooks, Rebecca Solnet, Ariel Levy in that order. Carol Hanisch is hated on this sub because she had some homophobic views, but her essay 'the personal is political' is amazing. Angela Davis is a lit…

lmao, what? So you can ignore my evidence, but I can't ignore you imaginary evidence? This conversation is laughable.
/r/MensRights08/05/17 05:27 PM

... You just said I ignored evidence. Did you just say that to be condescending, or was there something that I ignored. The evidence for the patriarchy would be the lack of women in powerful positions.
/r/MensRights08/05/17 05:24 PM

Lmao, I'm sorry I disagree with you, but what evidence did you present?

Ok, I see. Those aren't rights, those are cultural outcomes. I agree our culture is not equal, but to call them rights is misleading. And anyways, if you actually read feminism, you'd see that many of those things come from classical sexism. -women have shorter prison sentences, A) Women are infantized in our society, meaning we consider them less capable. This is an effect of women's traditional powerless role, and feminism is actively working against this. The reason you don't see a lot of peop…

Sure, people go more in depth, but at it's most basic level, that's what the patriarchy is. https://finallyfeminism101.wordpress.com/2007/03/21/faq-isnt-the-patriarchy-just-some-conspiracy-theory-that-blames-all-men-even-decent-men-for-womens-woes/ Not all men are Patriarchs. Creating a new inequality Feminism isn't working to create new inequality, it's working to create equality through the unapologetic addressing of our sexist culture. Liberation is not a zero-sum game, and liberating women does not come at the expense of enslaving men. In fact, many feminist I know believe that true liberation can only be reached through the alliance of men and women. Second, I don't believe the extremists have political clout. What are you referencing? Gender, politics and right…

The patriarchy is just the idea that men dominate the political and economic spheres. The evidence would be the lack of women in the highest political and business positions.
/r/MensRights08/05/17 03:35 PM

That has not been my experience at all. I think you're generalizing based off of a few. I'm a dude, and many of my female friends identify as feminists, but they are still extremely open to my point of view and my experiences. Yeah, if I started arguing that rape doesn't exist, they'd probably get pissed off, but I feel like that's pretty valid. You would probably get pissed off if someone said that men couldn't be raped.

Recently one of my friends said he was a feminist, and another friend was surprised because he had a conception of feminism that's more consistent with your view, and the feminist friend seemed so down to earth. So he talked to our friend group about it and found out we pretty much all are feminists. It's just that there's no need to talk about it all the time/label ourselves. You probably know some feminists.
/r/MensRights08/05/17 03:21 PM

I so disagree with this. The feminists I know in my life are very open to my opinions even with my penis. But many people on this sub refuse to take even a cursory glance at feminist literature despite constantly criticizing it.
/r/MensRights08/05/17 03:19 PM

Feminists literally criticize and disagree with each other though.
/r/MensRights08/05/17 03:17 PM
2

Yeah, but that's in direct response to the long history of male dominated law. It's not like a bunch of women decided to take over law to enslave men, it was to work towards gender equality. Yeah, there are extremists, but again, they're extreme because they're working in reaction to gender discrimination. it wasn't too long ago when a woman running for president would have been unheard of.

/r/MensRights04/05/17 06:43 PM

I don't want to be condescending, but if you don't know that humans are more social than birds then you don't know much about society. Humans are perhaps the most social of animals, and our social structures are incredible complex. We learn from each other in a way that very few other animals are able, and we're affected by culture to a much larger extent. Yes part of why we're attracted to people is biological (big boobs, big butts), but culture absolutely is a large factor, because fashion is …

Human's are much more social animals than birds, and you're ignoring the fact that I'm not saying its only society. And besides, birds do compete with other birds. That's why they've developed dances to attract mates.

Honestly, I'm more feminist-positive than most of this sub because my mom and my girlfriends have been feminists and never gave me shit, so I don't have the negative experiences that others do. But I do think it gets a bad rap on here compared to how I read it on my own. violence is a masculine trait that correlates with power. Men are the soldiers, the knights, the policemen, the robbers, all traditionally violent. Women tend to be the teachers, the housekeepers, the nurses. Males kill more on …

You should try to read the book... She criticizes traditional femininity and masculinity and praises the new critical look that's been given to gender roles. Even within the quote you have, she talks about how men have been helpful in the struggle for gender equality.

competing with other women is a societal influence though. You wouldn't compete with other women if it wasn't for society.
/r/MensRights30/04/17 04:05 PM

I'm not saying that it's only sociological, but that society definitely has a role to play in the development of people.
/r/MensRights30/04/17 02:25 PM

Because it absolutely has to do with social influences. Social influences are why baseball is popular in the US and why soccer is popular in Europe. And it absolutely has an effect on the genders as well. The only reason why girls are interested in makeup is because of society. There's no biological reason why girls are predisposed to makeup, and throughout history there have been times that men have been more interested in makeup than women. Same with high heels, they used to be exclusively wor…

I'm going to reply to just this comment if that's ok. To me, when I look at the numbers of men killed by women and women killed by men, it seems silly to talk about women killing men because men kill women at much higher rates. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1635092 I feel like you could redirect by mentioning that the women who say killallmen identify as feminists while all of the men do not identify as MRA, but that's because I think you miss the entire meaning of #killallmen. Many of the…

What if I had said that about feminists? You'd call me crazy. Have you actually read feminists text?
/r/MensRights17/04/17 11:51 PM

Because there are feminists that truly do want to kill all men. Yes, there are lunatics like this woman, but women's liberation groups have not called for killing men, and mainstream feminist writers like bell hooks or Rebecca Solnet advocate for men's liberation as well.
/r/MensRights17/04/17 11:26 PM

Awareness? How prevalent are feminist man-killers??? There are so many more important things we could be talking about. This woman needs psychological help, but I didn't think this sub was about women who need psychological help.
/r/MensRights17/04/17 11:23 PM

To be fair, there have been lots of male killers who have hated women. Surely there will be some women who hate men. Of course if you're a woman who hates men, you're going to be drawn to feminism, the 'woman's power movement'. That doesn't mean that feminism creates men-killers.

Actually, it's probably the responsibility of mental health groups to take care of them... You don't blame Christians for the Westboro Baptist Church, or MRA's for the countless male shooters that have hated women.
/r/MensRights17/04/17 11:19 PM

If you actually want to learn about feminism and women's liberation, I'd suggest bell hooks or Rebecca Solnet, they have more meaningful things to say than youtube.
/r/MensRights17/04/17 11:17 PM

But considering how broad feminism is, and the fact that feminist thought has been at the forefront of gender liberation, the few women who are delusional don't really matter. I wish this sub would be more preoccupied with men's liberation rather than just criticizing women's liberation groups. It's not a zero sum game.
/r/MensRights17/04/17 11:14 PM

This sub is too anti-feminist to have real discussions. I subscribe, but pretty much every post on my front page is usually just putting down women's liberation movements instead of promoting men's liberation.

I think OP was making a point that the CDC is the only agency that does consider forced penetration rape and tracks the numbers. Law enforcement does not. https://www.cdc.gov/violenceprevention/sexualviolence/definitions.html
/r/MensRights14/04/17 07:28 PM

Honestly law enforcement is pretty terrible about solving rape in general. To open it up to female victims as well, I know that many departments have thousands of untested rape kits. And women victims are usually given more than men, so the fact that law enforcement doesn't even do the bare minimum for women doesn't give me a lot of hope that they'll have their act together for men. The reason that rape has typically been defined as man on woman comes from how an academic view of rape developed …

I'm not sure I agree. The daily mail has been known to make up things for news, I'd rather we use a reputable source. https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2016/11/the-understudied-female-sexual-predator/503492/ Like the Atlantic is much better, and had a similar story out.

My understanding of feminism comes from my mom and then I read one of my exes books (by bell hooks) back when I was interested, and they had presented feminism as being more pro-men, listing that men had many problems in society and that some of those problems would be solved by gender equality.
/r/MensRights27/03/17 09:15 PM
1

I'm hip. I'm pretty interested in gender, but I'm also a man so I do have some critiques of feminism that I think are valid. But the female spaces on reddit are so small that I think its wrong to bring up men all the time in those subs, But menslib is practically dead and all this sub does is bash feminism.
/r/MensRights27/03/17 09:03 PM

Sorry, I originally wasn't going to reply because I didn't want to inflame everyone all over again when I voice some disagreements. So when people bring up these pop feminists, I have a few thoughts about them. I think the online feminism movement is extreme, and often delusional. And they also do a really bad job explaining what they're talking about. I used to read /r/tumblrinaction and look at all the whack shit they were saying. But honestly, the online feminist movement seems about the same…

So my understanding of feminism comes from my mom, and then I read a couple of books by bell hooks and rebecca solnet back in high school. And since then I haven't really updated my views since then. But both of the books I read were pretty pro-men in that they both commended the men that worked towards gender equality and talked about how gender roles harmed men too. (Like pushing men into more dangerous jobs, preventing them from getting help for mental illness leading to suicides.) But then I…
/r/MensRights27/03/17 08:31 PM

Yeah that sucks. I've encountered different feminists in my life. My mom is an OG feminist who grew up expecting to work in the kitchen and ended up owning her own business, so my understanding of feminism largely comes from her. She's always built me up and never made me feel ashamed of being male. I largely asked my OP question to see how everyone here wound up with such a different perspective on feminism then I did.
/r/MensRights27/03/17 08:23 PM

lol, but I'm the one that's trolling?
/r/MensRights27/03/17 08:16 PM

The op? Yeah, but I feel like there's a lot of anecdotal evidence that people base their opinions on which is fine, but I was wondering if there was some study or something that would go into it more, see what the rates for self-identified feminists agreeing with certain ideas or whatever.
/r/MensRights27/03/17 08:14 PM

that's just anecdotal evidence... I was looking for a study, or a academic paper or something like that

I really didn't come here to troll. I subscribe to menslib, and thought I'd broaden my perspectives. First posts I see are bashing feminism. Go into the comments, more feminism bashing. So I asked for a source so that I could try and look at it more objectively. Immediately bashed/sarcastic response. Yeah, I have some views that probably conflate with the sub, but I came here genuinely trying to learn more and am now leaving with a gross taste in my mouth :/

I mean I put this in another comment. But he didn't say, 'I believe' or 'I think', he made a statement like it was fact, sorry I made the mistake of thinking that his opinion might be based on something else that he could link to, giving me more information.
/r/MensRights27/03/17 03:17 PM
-8

Lol, is this for real? Feminists do not like men who go against their ideology, but can deal with that because that's who they have come to believe is their "enemy. This is a statement. It's not written with 'I think' or ' I believe', it's written as a statement of fact.
/r/MensRights27/03/17 03:11 PM

It's written like a fact... I really wasn't trying to come at him, I was wondering if this had any factual basis behind it, which evidently, it doesn't.

Feminists do not like men who go against their ideology, but can deal with that because that's who they have come to believe is their "enemy." However, they despise women who also go against them because now the logic doesn't compute b/c all women are supposed to be on their side. Source? edit: I generally don't like edits that try and save face, but I wasn't trying to come at him, just trying to see where that line of thinking of was coming from...
