That all sounds really delicious! (Aside from the flowers, they just sound nice.) What did you do for Father's Day?

Yeah, probably. If I had a daughter and she just needed a trim, I'd totally try a barber's first (if I've been convinced that I would butcher the job). If she wants a whole style though, off to the hairdressers we go!

Thanks for the explanation! I would love to read an article contrasting stay at home parents, part time workers, and full time workers on their reasons for their career choices. It seems like a really interesting topic.

The same reason why guys discourage each other from showing emotion in public. Society is fucked up. We box ourselves in, even when we're on the same side.

Mm, maybe it just wasn't her type of game? I know there are certain types of games that I can get more into than others. WoW? Nope. BoTW? Hell yeah! They're different experiences, different gameplay. Not everyone wants to grind in one or the other.

For some people. But what he did was kind of like breaking into someone's home, going to their bedroom, rummaging in their underwear drawer, and saying something like "Wow, you have a really shitty taste in socks." Not that it even made sense for him to be called that but...it was provoked and the other person was probably lashing out because they felt personally attacked.

I agree that programming takes a certain mindset but as far as I am aware, it has more to do with the personality of the individual than anything tied to their gender. Saying that one gender is worse at programming is like saying that one race or ethnicity is worse at programming. Biologically, there are differences but at the end of the day it has more to do with personality and interest.

Well, reading through the link, I did not find that men are more likely to be intelligent than women. What I did find was that men have a higher variance of intelligence than women, occupying both the highest and lowest bounds in IQ/g factor. If this is true, then women are actually more likely to be intelligent than men. That being said, I think the premise and thus the conclusion I just drew is ridiculous. Intelligence should not be defined purely by an IQ or g factor test. There was nothing i…

Then we're agreed. We see eye to eye in that every field is different and these differences are to be celebrated. The disparity in gender ratios can be attributed to a wide array of possibilities including general interest. I'm also glad to see that we have come to the agreement that intelligence is not a trait that either gender holds over the other. Visuospatial and vocal intelligence being, of course, entirely different matters in which men and women respectively seem to have the upper hand. …

As promised, here is the copy-pasta from my response to your other comment. I'm sure you'll agree that we're essentially having this conversation twice. Well, I looked into it and here is the Wikipedia link I found. It was actually a very interesting read. As far as I can tell, some studies have concluded that men have higher IQ/g factors, other studies have concluded that women have higher IQ/g factors, but the majority of the studies (especially recent ones) have concluded that neither gender …

What trait of programming determines the aptitude an individual will be able to achieve? In other words, what is the limiting factor which prevents individuals from becoming proficient programmers?
/r/MensRights28/04/18 09:54 AM
1

You may have a point with competitiveness as this is a trait that has been linked previously to testosterone, however your claim that women are generally less intelligent than men will require more grounding in scientific study for me to consider it a valid point.
/r/MensRights28/04/18 09:52 AM
1

So you're saying that, on the whole, women are less intelligent than men? Are we rating this using IQ tests? SAT scores? Overall GPA at the various level of schooling?

You made some excellent points regarding the biological differences between men and women and how these biological differences would hold sway over the interests and thus the passion and motivation behind any single person's occupation. However, given that an individual is inclined towards programming, enjoys it, and chooses it for their career, does it matter what their gender is? Also, I attempted to follow your link but it appears to be broken. Thank you for the effort though!

Men are acknowledged for their accomplishments. Your comment is on a comment actually listing a large amount of accomplishments by men. You're assuming that just women would be offended by that statement. Any person who disagrees with you would be offended by that statement. Let's not belittle the men who disagree with you. What is it about coding that makes you think that women would have less of an aptitude for it?
/r/MensRights28/04/18 01:20 AM

Just to be clear, are you saying that women cannot be great programmers because they are women? Are you also saying that in order to be a "great programmer" you must have created a language or a framework? I promise this leads somewhere. Edit: What is a "spergy brain"?

Here's the thing, you're making great points about interest that I mostly agree with. It takes a special type of person to sit down at a computer and work for 20+ hours only to realize that the bug was a typo regarding a semicolon. Not everyone has it in them and not everyone should. We need all different types of people to make this world work. However, the commenter I disagreed with specifically stated that women cannot code as well as men. There's nothing about programming that would give one…

They're not representative of all women but they are good examples of female programmers. In general, the more competitive a field is, the greater the minds are that are drawn to it. However, this is not the only thing that drives ratios in the various fields of study. If it's not a field that either gender is better at, then it follows that both genders are on equal footing in regards to potential aptitude. Some people do indeed have a higher aptitude for programming but this is not gender driv…

So are we talking about Computer Scientists or programmers who could also be engineers? From what I've seen and heard from colleges is that more women are flooding into CS than into ME, ARCE, and other engineering majors. But that's just me in my small corner. I've also been under the impression that women are more likely to prefer coding over engineering simply because they were not introduced to engineering earlier? Take the toys girls and boys are given as an example. Boys traditionally were …

Margaret Hamilton. Grace Hopper. Both great women programmers. In fact, the first programmers were women because the first programmers came from the human computers. It's not necessarily a field that either gender is better at. It just happens to be male-dominated right now for various reasons related to historical events and societal norms. It's a great field that, given its accessibility, should be open to all types of people.

For your last paragraph, would that mean that if both parties could not consent and they both knew that the other was incapacitated but they did it anyway...would they have both been raped by the other? That just seems murky.

I feel like we should be able to separate people's professional lives from their personal ones. We should be able to appreciate how great a scientist/engineer/doctor/athlete/whatever someone is without taking their personal life into account. But this would mean trying to accept that they were human and flawed and many-faceted as we all are.

There was this one great Louis CK bit on a related note. Here it is paraphrased: Dr.: So you're only cosmetically overweight L: What does that mean? First, very impressed with the guys in the picture on the right. No WAY could my friends organize for a picture like that. Too little patience. Second, why can't everyone just sit for a minute and contemplate the idea that everyone has rights until they infringe upon other people's rights? That's kind of the cornerstone to our nation.

I agree, it's really messed up that our society has made circumcision the norm (because based on several studies found in the comments there is little or no medical benefit and great amounts of long-lasting damage that results from the procedure). I also had no idea that the frenulum existed! Tell me more! As a kind of counterpoint, I would like to argue that neither the male nor the female form is completely and accurately covered in anatomical models or textbooks. As with the case of the frenu…

Oh oh oh!!!! Someone showed me an article about this recently, trying to explain to me that THIS is what I was doing. While some people point out their gender actively, I think a lot of us draw attention kind of subconsciously because we want all of the discussions we are a part of to have the same view of us. So it throws us off sometimes if we are mislabeled and we attempt to "correct" the perception.

I didn't say that people are actually being barred because of their gender. (And now that I'm writing this, I think it would have been best posted as a comment to the original post) The original post seemed to express the belief that men in STEM would be better off if women didn't enter the field. I was just saying that this would probably be a bad idea. Also, I completely agree that we have it easiest in terms of showing off our past projects/skills/etc. Places like GitHub and Bitbucket make sh…

I think I misspoke when I said "bar". The last paragraph or two in the original post kind of implies that women should be kept out of STEM to protect the men who choose STEM fields as a save haven. I'm saying that I don't think that would be right. Besides, assuming that the women who would ridicule those guys are "vacuuous materialistic chickenheads" (as the post says) then those wouldn't be the type of people who would get into STEM in the first place. Wouldn't it be healthier to expose the me…

So many! Off the top of my head... A programmer's wife says, "Can you go to the store and while you're there, can you grab some eggs?" He never came home. A programmer's wife says, "Can you go to the store and get a carton of milk? And if there are eggs, can you get a dozen?" The programmer comes home with twelve cartons of milk. 99 little bugs in the code, 99 little bugs! You crush one here, patch it around, 127 little bugs in the code! I have more but I got lazy. Very nice article! I really enjoyed reading it. Going out on a limb, I'm gonna assume it was a comment on my mention of my gender? I mentioned my gender as kind of a "hey, there are some females in STEM" note but realized after I posted that it wasn't really part of the discussion.

Hi! Female programmer here. Gotta say, you make a lot of really good points. I just want to stick my neck out there and say that the work we do definitely requires a LOT of drive, a lot of energy, a lot of time, etc. So I'd be really bummed if people were just getting shoved into our field who don't have that drive, that desire to learn more and really dive into the work that we do. Also, I remember seeing something earlier about how a lot of women actually experience discomfort if their partner is circumcised...? Something about a "scraping" feeling? But you're right. Huge edit!! I didn't realize this was a video. Hold onto your hats while I watch it. Okay, watched it. Definitely agree that we need more male teachers. At the same time, I don't know if we can just put a blanket statement saying that all female teachers are bad and all male teachers are good. But do all gay men like being bummed? They might prefer to do the bumming, or enjoy being rimmed or wear a ring. There are so many flavors of sex! Mm, I think that we've uncovered the oddities of people's sexuality in general but I agree that there seems to be a definite fight to gain control of media to influence the perception of female sexuality (or sexuality in general).

Toxic Masculinity

Extreme feminists are unwilling to accept and reconcile established science when it comes to biological differences in women in men because: -This science has historically been used to oppress women: --Women were sent to insane asylums because they suffered "womanly fits" --Women were sentenced to death because of their "wanton ways" --Women were "scientifically" proven to be the "lesser" sex due to differences in the brain which were seen as proof of their "weak wills" -People with extreme opin…

Toxic Maculinity I agree with this person's definition of toxic masculinity. It is, in fact, THE definition of toxic masculinity. Now tell me that it's not a problem in our society. My point is that toxic masculinity exists and it's an issue. The first step towards solving the issue is acknowledging it exists.

They are both dangerous schools of thought that are brought about by societal pressures and individual insecurity. The Isla Vista shooter was mentally unstable and an extreme individual but he was, unfortunately, not alone in his approach to masculinity. There are a lot of people who hold and exhibit those extreme feelings towards women AND men. Are you denying that toxic masculinity is a problem in our society?
/r/MensRights02/09/17 05:19 AM

I don't think we can accurately judge whether toxic masculinity or toxic feminism are better or worse than one another but neither one discounts the other and I think it's important to accept that they both exist.
/r/MensRights02/09/17 03:55 AM

How? There is such a thing as toxic masculinity (which is obviously different from normal masculinity) and it's damaging to the individual and the people around them. (See the Isla Vista shooter video for an example)

I think this is more of an economic and societal issue. People are always going to want a partner who they perceive as successful. It's part of the survival and reproductive instinct. The better a society's economy, the better its citizens will live and the more they will want to settle down and start families. The article makes it sound like people are having a hard time just getting by individually. If you can't take care of yourself, you're not likely to be trying for a family to take care of…
