In order for something to assume an orbit similar to Mars, you'd have to perform an orbit adjustment maneuver when you're crossing Mars orbit. 2	Bitter feminist tries to shame Elon Musk, gets BTFO The intended orbit was heliocentric (meaning, orbiting the Sun), with Perihelion (point of the orbit closest to the Sun) at about Earth's distance from our star, and Aphelion about Mars' distance, but never actually encountering either. They also let the second stage of the rocket run to almost-depletion for science and fun, the aphelion is actually halfway between Mars and the Asteroid belt.
