This is a great rule to run decisions thorough. If we break up tomorrow, how will future me think back on this decision? Will single future me be pleased or irritated? Move only if it's an upgrade for you, and extrapolated to do whatever if it's an upgrade for you, as a single.

"You chose him" is really only the first half "why and what, if any, red flags did you ignore?" Is the rest of the question. Taking responsibility for my choice and learning what pulled me in was extremely valuable for my personal growth. I don't think there's shame in being taken in by liars, so I don't get the anger in response to the question. I've also said a variation of this to 2 friends. One seriously thought about why she was no longer ok with her husband's emotional neglect after I said…

How is this not a threat worthy of a restraining order? The only positive to this situation is that it's shining the spotlight on how abusers operate, and that money and fame don't totally insulate someone.

The audacity is boundless! I have no idea what men who are decades older think they can offer. I know it's just plain, boring entitlement, but the lack of self awareness continues to shock me.

The issue I have with 50s housewife shit is that it was a lie and so many women were put through hell. Violence against women was, and still is, the norm. At least today society pays lip service to it being wrong.

It's a ritualized societal reminder that women are below men. I grew up in a highly patriarchal religious sect and saw this repeatedly. The men who were most aggressive about this cake nonsense seemed to end up with miserable wives from what I can remember.

Exactly. I once called out my aunt and cousin for pestering me to find a boyfriend after they had literally spent our entire day together detailing their husband's flaws. We need less putting up with disrespect, not more.

I love to see this kind of decisive action! Cake smashing was always incomprehensible to me as a child. The bride is all dressed up, with gorgeous makeup and everyone just accepts and even expects her brand new husband to make her gross and sticky in a show of physical dominance??? No thank you! That behavior is unacceptable.

I'm going to make the phrase "my 30s were just the beginning" my new self talk. I've had such a better time in my 30s than 20s. Its been amazing to see my girlfriends grow into powerful, take no shit, successful women. I know myself better and have so much more confidence to not put up with anyone's bad behavior. It's great counterprogramming to keep reminding us that we can make our 50s fantastic. Love this post.

I didn't feel safe dating again until I also read Lundy's book. It was like blueprint for how to protect myself and the red flags to look for.

You can kill a man, but you can't kill an idea.
