Same here. Mine was mandatory national service, and I am still quite bothered by it. For a long time (even after my service) I thought that I had a duty to protect my fellow countrymen, and it turns out they are mostly fucking pieces of shit anyway. You are confusing momentum with kinetic energy. Momentum is conserved in such a case, but not kinetic energy, and what really fucks you up is the KE of the bullet. Imagine a 100 kg man firing a gun, shooting off a 100g bullet at 1000 m/s. The man should experience a recoil of 1 m/s. KE wise, the man had a KE of 50J, but the bullet has a KE of 50000J.
