Personally I am constantly working on myself. What was once a turn on can now be a realized trigger. Oftentimes the way we see people changes. Acknowledging what happened in a way that gives the other space to answer to what happened honestly is in my opinion the best way. No beating around the bush, no ignoring your feelings, and definitely giving them the benefit of the doubt
