The problem with that quote is that it applies to enjoyable things too. If you're so powerful to choose not to be bothered by something, why bother trying to do anything, since you can just choose to be completely satisfied with anything? I'm OK with being hypocritical, and just won't let the bad things bother me. and a hamster is born.

no, i'm starting from the standpoint of evaluating who i am, how the world works, what my options are, etc. with a clear head. i use predictive power as my measure of what is likely enough to round up to "true" and unlikely enough to round down to "false", but also keeping an open mind and i am willing to change what i think if presented with different evidence. it is only after building this model that i conclude no matter what i do i will fail, so it's best to just try to eek out what enjoymen…

it's about maximizing the expected present value of utility. you don't spend all of your money on lottery tickets, do you? why are you afraid you'll fail?

yes, that one instant ... that you have to do over and over again for the rest of your life. and if you mess up you'll be even further behind. all for a chance that, let's be honest, almost certainly won't work out. you don't get that time back at the end of your life if it didn't work out.

the real story is how she sees it by default as an available option should she choose to do so. it wasn't an option for me, no one wanted to fuck me when i was in college (and no one want to fuck me now too).

There’s no, let’s just go out with this cute girl and see what happens. That’s how a date should be. i think the thing is, if it's a "see what happens" thing, then both people should expect to pay their fair share. she clearly doesn't.

i said it in that other subreddit, but i'll say it here too: if you're talking about only shooting the shit, having good company, etc. there are many more men who would be much better company, simply because we share more in common. not every man, but so many that the vast majority of women wouldn't come close to the top of my "who would be cool to hang out with" list. the women who would be high on that list? they could do better. vague suggestions (i wouldn't even call them promises) of more i…

i've had women try to use me for free meals. usually they'll be more eager than other comparable women. they'll suggest a dinner time date, and if you ask them where they want to go, they'll suggest an expensive restaurant. these women usually have carefully curated internet presences. it's at this point where i say something like, "just to be clear, let's each pay for ourselves or split 50-50" and then they'll suddenly turn on me.

i mean, it's a mix of people with various understanding of the situation. a good analogy would be the war with iraq. most people were just caught up in the bullshit, and were too lazy to bother taking a close look. other people had a pretty good understanding of what would happen, but perpetuated lies.

Millennials need to take responsiblity i think if you actually talk to some of them, you'll find that many do feel a sense of ownership over their lives and put in a lot of effort (while working smartly) try and better themselves. taking responsibility and accurately describing the current situation and how we got here questioning the desirability of the current situation considering changes that could lead to a more desirable economy and society are not mutually exclusive. it's more about the e…

i'd say you're probably right, though most people probably aren't aware that they're doing this. it's not worth it's own post, but i think it's the same concept in how prostitution is often described as "selling their bodies." that's not really the right term. selling your body would be like agreeing to slavery in exchange for some consideration. "renting" their bodies is more appropriate; and hired for a service is even better. by using selling it implies a permanent loss of what they are givin…

it doesn't matter. if they percieve it as harassment it's harassment. you have to ask yourself: are they here to talk to me? are they really open to talking to strange men in this place? almost always, the answer is no. they're doing shit. they're not out doing something so that, maybe, some guy will come up and say they look really nice. it's like the same as (you don't really see them these days) harikrishnas giving people flowers. or, mormons going door to door. it's variying degrees of haras…

at my company you are required to disclose all conflicts of interest or potential conflicts of interest. not disclosing to the company that you own another company, or have a second job, even if it's completely unrelated to your current job with them, is a fire-able offense.

I am talking about a very small, simple business where you don't right away quit your day job and you start really small and you only need to invest a few hundred dollars. If the idea fails, or isn't going anywhere, don't throw good money after bad. FWIW, i don't know of many companies that would look kindly on you spending a significant amount of your time, to the detriment of your main job, working on a side business.

Well, except that human interactions are more complicated than golf swings the difference being that regardless of where you are in the universe the laws of physics are the same, but when interacting with people, one person's "rules" could be different from another person's. you could introduce more complexity into you're "model" to decide what to say and do, but this requires larger N. essentially it's a regime switching model. for example, consider the level of forwardness (asking personal que…

article is pay-walled, so i can't read the whole thing they found a statistically significant increase in connectivity between different parts of the brain, but it doesn't say how much of an increase. basically, the tested H_0: \mu = 0 vs H_1: \mu > 0 for both treatments. a consistent, immaterial effect is not very exciting. the same could be said about the blood test results. the study does suggest it can help reduce stress, i'll give them that, but it says nothing about improving performance.

longterm stock indexes long term average ~6% return, but are volatile. if you have a 50 year horizon that could be a pretty good risk/reward trade-off, but if you have a 10 year horizon, not so much.

"why" can be confused asking about someone's stated motivation, rather than asking about what in the beginning state of things caused the thing in the ending state of things you're interested. for example, if you ask "why did she fuck someone else?" the answer could be any explanation she may come up with the justify her answer. instead, if you ask "how did it come to be that she fucked someone else?" you can focus on the facts that lead from one situation to another, …

my fault is that for any woman i'm interested in there are 5 guys way more attrative than me who are also interested in her. with a shit ton of effort for a few years, assuming i don't stall or quit during that time, i might be able to beat out one or two of them (also assuming they're not doing the same thing).

i feel like the main theme of your post is really just another matrix/blue pill/system of control. it's the idea that we have the control over our lives, that we have the power to change our situation. of course, it's not a black and white thing, it's complicated. i'm reminded of a study where the subjects were told to press a button to get a reward in a game, only the button wasn't hooked up to anything. the subjects were separated into two groups, and conditioned to be depressed or happy. gues…

i see your problem. you're attributing it to an inherent weakness, but actually it has nothing to do with the inherent abilities of individual people. you'd be a "weak-ass pansy bitch" if you were given the same conditioning. that's what a randomized study means. if you can't understand that, then maybe you aren't as smart as you think you are. but hey, i'll bite: you seem to be saying it's good that we arbitrarily set some people up to fail. how is that better for everyone? honestly, if you're …

i don't really understand your comment. first, "remove" isn't really the right word. on average, IQ scores were about a standard deviation lower. second, it means that people who totally could do a job are prevented from doing so, and peolpe who are actually incompetent skate on by. third, i guess if you only consider white men "on your team" then i guess what you said kind of makes sense.

it's not a matter of listening or not. remember, people were randomly assigned to a group. both had incentives to do as well as possible. it's just that, on average, those who were told they would do poorly did poorly. if you were told you'd do poorly you'd probably do worse than if you were told nothing at all, despite all of your "not listening" skills. what's more, messages to women and racial/ethnic minorities aren't just one-off things, but they're told they suck from day 1. being told you'…

you don't need to dump her, just don't marry her. keep your finances separate, don't spend money on her. keep an emergency fund. you don't have to lie, you can tell her the truth, that you'll never marry her, if you want. just stay non-committal untill she presses the issue and leaves.

peer reviewed experiments have shown that IQ scores are affected by how well people expect to do at them. for example, one experiment randomly told people that people with the same left/right handedness are good/bad/didn't say anything. e.g. "oh you're right handed? usually right handed people do worse on these things." the results showed that being told you're expected to do poorly lowered their scores. so, to the extent that women or racial/ethnic minorities are told they're not expected to do…

Dudes, Life is hard and almost never fair. But why sit around and complain about this when you can change this. Life being hard and almost never fair is something you can't change. Sometimes you can't fax glitter, not with any attitude.

I know my self, my situation, and what is under my power to change and what isn't. Other people start with different things, and are in different situations, than me. The fact is, there's a wide variety. None of this is Earth shattering. What you refuse to believe though is that some people have a situation so extreme that no matter what they do they can not change their situation. How pervasive this is is an empircal question, but in my experience it's not that "extreme" at all. The fact that y…

You assume everyone has infinite agency, which is not very realistic. that kind of naive (spelling, whatever) gives TRP a bad name.

If the requirement to obtain that is learning how to develop friendships i know how to develop friends, but that doesn't mean that i can, or have an interest in it in for its own sake. i'd argue that, on average, people can see through the thinly-veiled (at best) ambivalence (at worst, disgust) which makes developing new friends a waste of time.

i agree, but it's pretty depressing. i don't really need or want friends, but seems necessary to getting what i really want. but, just like hobbies, it's not going to work unless you're actually into it. i.e. people will pick up that you're not really interested in them, even if you "fake it 'till you make it."

As far as I know, and correct me if I'm wrong, doesn't the power structure argue that all places of power are dominated by white men? That it is fundamentally pitted against minorities (even though in the US the majority of voters are women). i have never heard this argument, and i've been in "left" circles for some time. if you could link to an example, that would be helpful. doesn't the power structure argue that all places of power are dominated by white men? that, in general, can be empirica…

Knowing what abundance mentality is and having it are two different things. i read "it" as having actual abundance vs. the mentality. half of this subreddit is about self-deception.

Remember, 100% of people who don't try will fail. you should really drop this manipulative trope. it's just another rhetorical "The Matrix." 100% of people who don't try flying from a tall building can't fly from a tall building. so, i guess we should all try, because what's the harm? yes, 100% of people who don't try will fail, but you're measuring the wrong thing. what you'd really want to know is if the expected benefit is greater than the expected cost.

That's what I find so fucked up about women: the fact that so many of them have literally no self-awareness. deliberate self-unawareness. that is what therapy is for.

it depends on the context. if you're really that rich, you can buy the right kind of cloths to make yourself look ~90th %-tile in that context, you should be good. I remember a while back reading a thread here posted by a guy who picked up some girl at the bar after she was giving clear IOI's and signs that she was down to fuck...that is until she saw the expensive Rolex watch

from the "schedules of mating" sidebar I want to stress again that (most) women do not have some consciously constructed and recognized master plan to enact this cycle and deliberately trap men into it. Rather, the motivations for this behavior and the accompanying social rationales invented to justify it are an unconscious process. For the most part, women are unaware of this dynamic, but are nonetheless subject to its influence. the same thing could generally be said about men too. many "decis…

my beef with advice surrounding "mindset" is that it's religious thinking and distracts from other, testable causes. it's religious thinking because the theory is impossible to prove or disprove. you changed your mindset and it didn't help? you didn't really have the right mindset.

Maybe this is too controversial, but: a 17 year old guy can fuck a 17 year old girl. A 30 year old guy can't fuck a 17 year old girl.

Good post; sums up what I've been trying to tell people for a while. I'd add two points: Point 1: the idea of diminishing marginal utility in an economy with more than one good. Basically, say you can have either doughnuts or coffee, both are "good," but after the 10th doughnut, you'd probably prefer a cup of coffee rather than another doughnut. Doughnut:coffee::"staying home studying":"wild crazy night of sex". So, if you've had your few years of partying, while it may not have much appeal to y…
