That makes sense on some level. However, why, then, do we not see men as equal (nay, identical) leaders in the feminist movement?

So... we totally agree on 99% of this, cool.

No, I phrased it poorly. When I said I respect the belief, what I meant is the argument can be valid, not that I personally believe in it. I don't. The argument can be valid because of your second quote. Once you've codified meaningful differences between genders, it's not a big step at all to then decide one is better.

It's absolutely a sweeping generalization, which is why I'm against it.

I don't believe women think better.

Oh. Well, take something like http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2012/03/a_study_in_leadership_women_do.html (I just found it quickly). It defines women as being better 'leaders' than men, based on them doing better on 12 of 16 leadership criteria. This is a valid belief, truly - they've defined 'leadership', and found that women are better at it. Note at this point that any possible definition or measurement of leadership will at some point be arbitrary. It's ok to say that a particular kind of leadership…

I don't believe women are better thinkers or better thinkers in technology. However, if they think differently, it's only a small step for someone to define better as 'the way women think'. (Better, of course, is always defined by an outside source and is often contextually based).

I think there's slides with actual reasons after. It's not supposed to refer to the men pictured.

That's what I believe, essentialists think otherwise.

Not agreeing with it, so I don't need to define better or explain how they think better. But if you think women think differently, it's not a hard step to then believe their different is better.

It's definitely very insulting. However, I respect the belief that women 'think better' than men as long as it allows for men to change and equal the women. Unfortunately, the view is too often held by gender essentialists.

How do you feel about weight classes in boxing? If you were against 'making people watch sub par athletes', you'd be against the smaller weight classes, because a bigger guy would likely take out the smaller one all the time. But that's crazy, because it's an unrealistic and reductionist view of sports. Feminists are supporting more entertaining athletes, if you want to watch women's sports. And if you view competition within a particular group as legitimate, they're not even supporting sub par …

I hope everyone worked up about this doesn't think feminists are overreacting the next time they perceive a joke as sexist...

...I'm sure that colleges tend to have far more byzantine, anti-male policies (ie the preponderance of evidence stuff). That doesn't change that the military is a far more direct extension of the government and is in many ways more controlled by politicians.

Yet I wouldn't say that college is just an extension of politicians. Uh, well the military is far more directly under the control of politicians than colleges are, even publicly-funded ones.

Who cares if the athletes are sub par? Pure athletic competition isn't the only point of athleticism, as silly as it sounds. There are social factors (on part of the athletes themselves) and entertainment factors for the spectators.

It's not an attack when they say men can change and become equal. It's an attack when gender essentialists from both sides say men are fated to be one way or another.

There's nothing wrong with this. He's not denying these women agency, he's certainly not saying all abused women are like this. The 'wrong' comes from the fact that I doubt he'd extend this sympathy to men, their equals.

Not all feminists are sex-negative by any means (but I must admit Dworkin-style coalitions of social conservatives and radical feminists terrify me). But yes, there are strands in modern academic feminism that recognize non-white, non-upper class, etc women - whether they do so effectively or simply pay lip service varies.

You mean the false rape claim percentage of 20-25% is a percentage of total claims, not rapes, right?

Where was that article where Amanda was ridiculing people for taking rape threats seriously because, you know, like, they are so rarely followed by an actual incident, and stuff? What! Link, please.

Essentially untrue as of 3rd wave feminism, but often true in practice.

If nobody ends up formally charged, it should be treated as a false police report. However, this could end up harming people who believe they've been raped but are not aware of the precise legal definition, and discourage victims from coming forward. If someone is formally charged (or if their name becomes public), I don't know what I'd do. You're a bit harsh, and your friend's a danger to the public.
