To me it's about neediness. The less needy you are, the more power you have over yourself and your life. For example, the "girlfriend wanted me to stop going out and drinking with my friends..." scenario would be handled differently between a person who's needy and one who's not. A needy person would base his decision on someone else's validation besides his own. If he would rather please his friends, he will go with his friends to not seem "whipped".
