Who then sets a moral standard and laws? Like, I assume we might agree that murder is bad. In your view, does the government enforce that morality or should it be enforced privately?

Social change is a constant. Traditionists just go about it slower than progressives.

I don't think you realize that our country, even the world, is in a constant state of moral progress. Progressives just value that over traditional. Some would say we value new, scientific understanding of humanity and morality over older morality not based on science.

No one's mentioning how utterly ignorant this kid was for accepting that meetup. He had no way of knowing if the person on the app was the same girl he met up with. She's obviously a horrible human being, but hopefully that guy leaned his lesson.

Thank you for the perspective. This seems like a much more reasonable scenario in which the woman got a reasonable punishment for her responsibility in the matter.

I understand that. But clearly, if there's at least one black person with high intelligence, it stands to reason that all humans are capable of high intelligence given enough time. To assume that white people are better or more valuable than blacks because of differences of intelligence is fallacy. We're all human beings. If there is an intelligence gap, then my first inclination would be to create a society in which those with less intelligence would eventually be able to attain similar intelli…

It's not the "facts" that are racist. It's the pairing of this information with a racist title. As well as the assumption that the value of a human being can only be measured by IQ. It's the assumption that whites are better and more valuable because they have a higher average IQ. As if this makes dumb white people any better. I was randomly born a white male. In American culture, I'm lucky because of this. I'm not a white male because of anything I've earned or attained in life. Bragging about …

It's important to understand the relevance of stats. Assuming this is true, which I am not but for the sake of argument, there may be general qualities in black people that make them valuable human beings despite an overall lower IQ. Further, if this IQ gap is true, it's important to consider why. Is it because of socioeconomic status? A lack of access to higher education? Are blacks given the same opportunities as whites to achieve the same levels of intelligence throughout generations? The ans…

Social Justice movies flop? How about The Color Purple or Fight Club? Schindler's List or Philadelphia? This article's a sham, pandering to the low hanging fruit of the men's rights camp.

Well... what's being said here is that the movie is a flop. But it's not. It won't be a financial flop and it won't be a social flop. It's getting better-than-average reviews on IMDB and Common Sense Media, a 73% on the Tomatometer... it really isn't as bad as those who inhabit male-centric gender politics forums would have others believe. That being said, I don't really like the idea of the movie. Not really my thing, although I'm a big Ghostbusters fan. But my daughters and I might watch it wh…

It's generally assumed that a movie needs to double it's production costs in worldwide sales in order to turn a profit. This movie is almost halfway to reaching that number. After merchandising, DVD/VOD/streaming, it will most definitely turn a healthy profit for the studio.

Many movies don't start off great and grow legs. Others don't do well but make money after they get out of theaters. It's generally considered a financial success if a movie doubles it's productions costs in worldwide gross sales. I predict that by 2017, this movie will have made $288 million. It's nearly halfway there after 10 days in the theaters. Without accounting for merchandising or DVD/VOD/Streaming sales. I don't think it'll make enough money to warrant a second movie, but it isn't a flo…

The article isn't including the worldwide gross sales. Only reporting domestic, which is flawed. Including both sales numbers, the movie is almost halfway to making it's production and marketing costs back.

I dunno. I think the feminist reboot of Mad Max went pretty well.

I don't know if I'd consider making $122 million worldwide (not just domestic), in the 10 days since opening, on a movie that cost $250 million to produce and market, would be considered a flop. It's easily going to make money. They're already nearly halfway there and the movie's only been out for 10 days. I don't know why this sub keeps promoting the fall of this movie. I don't think people here understand the movie business so much. I mean, even The Last Airbender (which was horribly reviewed,…

I don't suspect I'd gain much from having any value to you anyhow. Based on your inability to conform to basic writing standards, you probably should've been paying more attention to some of those stupid teachers in school. Yes, my original comment, and those that follow, are valid. You can't combat bigotry with more bigotry. It only extends the cycle. So using this one event at some high school, you feel qualified to generalize the entirety of public education and those who work within it? Most teachers and most schools aren't stupid. You hear about ridiculous stuff happening, but the reason you hear about it is because it's ridiculous and out of the norm. Most teachers and school-systems aren't stupid. Just like most men aren't violent.

I don't think you understand that the abstract point of my comment was that the system of success and failure might be influenced by a long history of cultural favoritism for masculinity. What our society considers as "success" might be based on thousands of years of masculine influence. It's not that the outcomes in scientific research would be different. Of course. It's that the paths to "success" in those fields might look different in a culture that wasn't based on a masculine history. You'r…

I'm not sure. But I might theorize that it doesn't play a direct role. The idea that our system of success and failure being based around humankind's historical favoritism of masculinity was kind of based on what they discussed in the interview about a competitive environment vs. a nurturing environment. Are successes in STEM fields framed in a traditionally masculine way?
/r/PussyPassDenied14/11/15 09:00 AM
-10

Well, wait a minute. I'm not a feminist. I'm certainly an open-minded egalitarian. What if the way society rewards success and failure is based on thousands of years of humans' priority on masculininty? We can admit that human history is full of men ruling and making the rules. Only in the last century has this even been questioned. We now know that women are capable of far more than human history has given them credit for. So when women fail at something, is it because our system of success and…

All ideologies have an amount of followers who arrived at those beliefs not by sound reasoning or rational research, but because they just feel like it's right. This includes religions, philosophies, ideologies, sports fans, anyone belonging to a group. The hard part is discerning them within groups that you agree with. There's a danger in letting people like this, people with whom you actually share similar viewpoints, influence you. It's easy to get caught up in the emotional gratification of …

I see feminism as an ideology in which, much like any religion, the dedicated followers shun those who don't commit fully. They have a narrative which requires an unwavering belief in something that isn't provable. They try to push this belief on other people. I, like you, am generally liberal in my opinions. When it comes to gender theory, though... I'm an egalitarian. EDIT - I'm a regular contributor to /r/feminism and enjoy discussing the struggles women face in modern society. Even today, I …

A person under a certain age is unable to consent. People at younger ages are easier to manipulate and coerce. You can make a kid think it's their idea. Anyone who works around teenagers can tell you that this is an easy group of people to manipulate.

Nope. 19 year old brains are more fully developed. Not quite as much as they should be. Some are better developed at that age, some aren't. The more years you have over someone, the more able you may be to manipulate them. Which is why we get suspicious around couples with large age gaps.

I've really enjoyed the What Would You Do series. I feel like OP is trying to make something out of nothing, though. Clearly, neither type of women would have gotten away with it. I feel that for the sake of this sub's credibility, being accurate to the facts is important. The title is overly sensationalized. The teacher hasn't been fired, he's been put on administrative leave and remains there while the investigation is going on. There's an important distinction between those two concepts: being fired and being placed on leave. The author, not the OP, is to blame for this. A feminist, which I am not, might accurately say that these things are because of the sexism that perpetuated our culture until recently. We all put women on a pedestal, treated them as nurturers. Men did this and women accepted it. So because men were sexist in not treating women equally, the holdover is that they get less harsh prison sentences, kids in the divorce, and are generally seen as victims instead of perpetrators.

I think the problem is that some women recognize the power and influence they can assert over men when they dress provocatively. It's a great feeling to have when wearing a low-cut shirt or dress can cause shallow men to give you more preference than you're reasonably worth. There's a responsibility that comes with that power, though. I wonder if women haven't accepted this responsibility. We notice drama and craziness all the time because that's what we're tuned to hear about as humans, but what about the non-dramatic girls who are subtle? You may not get a chance to judge th…

You're making mistaken, unfounded assumptions and proving my theory that generalizing isn't wise.

I like interesting, novel, and unique sex. I like a girl who likes the same. The types of women I'm emotionally attracted to have promiscuous tendencies. My last relationship wasn't "open", but it wasn't monogamous, either. We slept with other women together. It doesn't bother me that a woman who's emotionally attached to me would seek sexual gratification elsewhere. Sex is awesome. I like seeking sexual gratification elsewhere as well. I don't believe in double standards so I guess I'd have to …

I think I see some truths to TRP, but I can't bring myself to approach people with a preconceived idea. Prejudging someone is really difficult for me. TRP requires that I make (sometimes negative) assumptions about women in order to be compatible with them. I'm not sure what the whole of egalitarian justice is, but if it means that I take people at face value and take their word until proven otherwise, then yeah... that's how I've rolled for a long time now. I've fought pretty hard to maintain t…

Thanks for writing. I really appreciate it. I've initiated the breakups of all three of the major relationships I've had as an adult. That includes my marriage. My ex-wife definitely got crazy and hurtful, though. Not as bad as some of the stories on here. I've chalked it all up to karma, though, and took my punches and worked through it all. The other relationship, she cheated on me and I never got over it, so I dumped her. The third, she would get crazy with other guys so I broke up with her b…

Having been falsely accused of rape in the past, I understand the damage that can be done. It's something that guys can't talk about because even mentioning the word rape, regardless of context, can have the effect of disturbing people around you. A guy talking about rape? Is he an apologetist? What REALLY happened? It's devastating.
/r/MensRights11/07/13 02:38 PM

Ok - if he doesn't feel he was raped, if he wasn't raped. If he's not suffering any damage from it and he's seemingly ok with it, then there's nothing to worry about. Of course women can rape men, but just as there are a few women who say no but mean yes, there are guys who say no and mean yes. Those girls took a HUGE risk, but if he feels ok with it, just let it be.

Divorce is a necessary component that both sexes deal with. This may be a fact (I'll give you the benefit of the doubt), but those who interpret facts in order to serve their bias and purpose tend to be emotional manipulators. What was your point in mentioning the divorce rates? Did you plan on using that to convince me of your point? Because there are a million intangible reasons as to why that may be true. If you want to pick and choose the ones that prove your bias, then go ahead. But I'll be…

Haha! The generalization police? I didn't know that was a thing. It's just not reasonable to speak in those terms because you start to actually believe it. Then you start misjudging people within that subset and then you miss out on who the person really is.
/r/TheRedPill05/07/13 10:33 PM

Generalizations are never logical unless you've got unbiased, peer reviewed analysis of the subset. "Black men, aged 18-24, from lower class neighborhoods, raised by single mothers are more likely to end up in jail in America," could be true. When people use this fact (I made it up for example's sake) to justify their negative stereotypes, that's when I tune out. All women are like this and do that... give me some stats.

In the beta, lover boy's defense, anytime anyone speaks in generalities about a subgroup of people (cops, Christians, women, men, blacks, Mexicans), I tend to tune them out. Generalization isn't logical and it's the tool of those who use emotions to manipulate their audience.

That could be how the OP spun this. Without the light of an unbiased witness or unedited recording, we are both foolish to make any assumptions.

No such thing as common sense. This woman didn't file a false police report and calling 911 for help in what seems like a threatening situation isn't bad. It's good. Because then the cops would've come and sorted it all out and everyone would've been on their way. You're making a grand leaps of assumption to prove your point. The woman would've had to call 911. The woman would've had to wait around for police to arrive. The police would've had to question both parties and found sufficient eviden…

I'm asserting that there's a clear difference between threatening to call for police protection and physically causing someone harm by throwing soda at them. One is illegal, the other is totally passable and understandable unless you're a belligerent drunk guy walking down the street.
/r/MensRights05/07/13 05:23 PM

I disagree. I can't speak with any authority, not knowing where this took place, but I'm going to assume that it's not against the law to threaten someone with calling 911. Throwing a Coke in someone's face is against the law.

Not always. It takes an overwhelming assertion of optimism to counteract a general pessimism because human beings are wired to respond to unfamiliar situations with fear and caution.

Having a drunk man shout, "WTF is wrong with you?" could come across pretty scary to a woman. Especially if there was actually something wrong with her.

Wow, dude. Have some empathy. I'm all for men's rights and shit, but you don't know who she is or what she's been through. She could be scared out of her wits or suffering PTSD from a previous incident. Who knows. Grow up. The world would be a much better place if we just assumed that people had a legitimate and acceptable reason to act the way they do until proven otherwise. The proper response would've been to either ignore her and let her distance herself from you or, at the most, shouted a c…

Ummm... I've been a single father for 7 years since my youngest daughter was 6 months and my oldest daughter was 2. I've NEVER experienced anything like this at all. Ever. Maybe it's regional? I live in Seattle and am with my daughters on public transportation, at malls, and restaurants around the King County area.

They get involved when one of the parents has to get on state assistance for rent, food, whatever. Well... someone gets involved. Maybe not support enforcement, but I guess I'm referring to the whole machine, not just those in child support enforcement.

You're right, but they ended up together in the end. You got the idea she was crazy and he wanted that. Not so in 40D40N. I guess I saw Wedding Crashers as humorous. When I saw 40 Days, I was put off.

In the concept of that movie, though, it IS funny because the tables are turned on him. It's done in a way that puts Vince Vaugn as the victim to the type of predatory stuff it's assumed he'd been doing, too. And it wraps up nicely. The reality that we have to accept is that some men, like some women, enjoy having sex forced upon them. That wasn't made clear in 40D40N, but when it's done tastefully, I feel it's acceptable.

I did too. And it felt like there was no closure to that point in the movie. Like... that's when I checked out of the movie. In the real world, that would be police involvement, restraining order, etc, etc... Bad film making, in my opinion.
