Really depends on which form of Buddhism you're talking about. That interpretation sounds like Theravada. In most Mahayana schools, there is no detachment from feeling or any other phenomena. To detach means to reject, which is based on grasping at concepts. The key is to stop grasping at concepts altogether and let innate wisdom arise naturally.

It's because of mass nouns vs. count nouns in English. Count nouns get inflected with an ending 's', but mass nouns do not. Advice is interestingly enough a mass noun, even though you can be given a discrete number of pieces of advice. For example, cat is usually a count noun. If you use it as a mass noun, it is implied you're talking about the cat's meat - "There was cat all over the road." vs. "There were cats all over the road."
