I suggest you read more widely than subreddits, e.g. studies, about what it means. It's a real thing.

Maybe, when I said heavy and really hard times I should have elaborated to also mean any of life challenges? Like financial stress, or job promotions, or house renovating gone wrong, moving across the country, or not feeling like they can meet the expectations of being the Captain, as well? Negotiating all of this successfully requires good character, too.

Absolutely, everyone should choose their best option. However, please also refer to my reply to u/lavachequirie.

That is certainly appreciable that you feel there are enough good men. Perhaps that is your subjective experience because you have been blessed with several of the factors that attract these good men to you. I will suggest that most women have to vet men carefully because IMO and long-time observation, good men are not the majority. Hence looking for character is something worth top priority. I have not promoted the idea that women should accept someone with any issues. My message was to look fo…

I agree. This sub is supportive of the ladies. Even in the post I refer to, they were pro me making a good choice for myself. But just like anything, we have to be careful not to take everything as gospel.

Partners having an ongoing behavioural challenge is also right up there for having to think through the pros and cons. Turned out, I am one of those people. My partner fought his own battle and when he was through the other side he noticed traits in me that were worth looking into. And he's been supportive and pulled not one single punch, metaphorically speaking, about my own shortcomings. His humanity amazes me. Horses for courses, with making a good match. Hence thinking the possible relations…

My apologize, I am truly mortified! It didn't even occurred to me that english wasn't your first language. And ironically, I'm a big supporter of the meme saying that while an english-only speaker may be derisive about not understanding another person's using a second language, and sometimes even being a bit mean, that they're less skilled than the multi-linguist person because the multi-linguist use at least 2 languages while the english-only person only understand one. I am clearly one of thos…

Narcissism encompasses both being kind and humble, that's 'playing the game' to get what they want, and other negative behaviours including what you have described. You sound like a thoughtful, lovely young lady. Don't sell yourself short.

Tony Robbins gives an interesting perspective, can't remember where in the video he explains it (about halfway?), but it does make sense. It's a pretty good video about men and women. https://youtu.be/nfsiU3rgBr4

I would like to be the lucky first to welcome you. I am not a rpw, but I do appreciate this subreddit. My tip for what you are looking for is to read the Community info, in the top right tab above, and the book, The Surrendered Wife.

Umm, ok. I am new to reddit, relatively, especially posting, myself. I don't remember seeing this in the rules, but after work I'll do so, if that's what's expected. Thank you for the information

Thank you for your thoughts and information. I was am enabler, and I was codependent, so the recipe kept up both in the cycle, unfortunately. As much as I can't win here, nor can he, because I turned into part of his cycle. I have joined various subreddits regarding alcohol and enabling and am going to my local AlAnon group tomorrow. Btw, love your username!

Well, the paradox is that the things I consider important - a more peaceful life (him to address his alcohol issues) I asked for, but as everyone here has said, he is the only one who can decide to do that. And although it started as my concern, he did take it on, but not heartily. And it is true that I don't think I am deserving, so I am not direct about things that are for me. Although I enjoy being loving and sexy, it is about that, not getting something that is totally for me. I was raised w…

Thank you so much for sharing of yourself and about support and information. Your words have struck me the hardest and most effectively. I have used counselling support, but maybe it was a denial that I never looked into alcohol related support until recently. Your story is poignant, I respect the strength of both of you and wish you well.

Did not share with him, ok, understood. As I say, my way of thinking was to just be good to him, I had not thought in terms of verbalizing expectation.

Yes, I know. I am an annoying optimist who will try to 'be there', and lose myself in the process. I have spent way too much time thinking about all the variations, and I do know it was a big ask of myself and rose tinted glasses of me to try to champion him. The sunk cost fallacy, indeed

I feel you are isolating the sentence from the context of my personality as a whole. I am like I am. He was like he was. I thought my nature could benefit him.

As I have said elsewhere, I am just of a giving nature, as anyone who knows me would agree. It was not a way of eliciting anything, it is who I am.

I can understand its a lot easier, yes. Laura Doyle also retracted her statement about not being involved with people with addictions, and other problems, as she stated she had never experienced such a relationship and didn't understand, but was roundly informed by many women who were in these relationships, and hopefully read enough health research to help her understand it wasn't as simple as her beliefs.

He is progressively drinking less, it's at a normal social standard at the moment, between 2 and 5 drinks at any one occasion, on weekends/time off work only. He has seen several counsellors/psychologists (looking for 'the right fit', so that the interactions are as genuine and useful as possible, and had seen a particular one, ongoing). He, and we, have gone to drug and alcohol counselling. He discusses with me his learning in these sessions. He is understanding his own processes and how it inf…

There-in lies the truth. I honestly believe he is capable of rising to his place, he has shown determination and focus. And as mentioned in the original text, recovery can take years, and it's just not a straight-line journey, as is well known in the mental health affiliations. I feel that my behaviour towards him has been one of the biggest influence in his steps towards recovery. He used to be a corporate achiever in his mid twenties to late thirties, he is clearly capable of stepping up. His …

Ok, thank you for clarifying. I have to admit, my behaviour wasn't an attempt to change his behaviour, generally or with alcohol use. I am just a giver and wanted to know how to subtly get what I desire more of. Am I asking in the wrong subreddit? I thought this subreddit was about accentuating our feminine wiles to product a more traditional outcome in our relationships, including getting what we want without modern, sometimes abrasive, approaches. If so, a redirect is appreciated.

Yes, I am aware of this. I thought if he had a loving partner, he would naturally step up. May I ask, IYO, is the concept of a captain that they be without any lesser sub-behaviours? It's such a minefield of what's a measure of a man and of a woman, in any sub-culture.

Oh, I thought a term of affection would be ok. But ok, I'll adjust, and answer you're questions. The problem is I am very giving but I don't receive anything similar in return, e.g., I will give him random back and shoulder rubs, whereas if I come home from work and mention how sore my back is, it doesn't occur to him to give me a back rub. That's just an example, there are variations of this throughout our relationship. I don't know what the root of the issue is, that's why I'm asking about it.…

Wow, you sound exactly like what OP's talking about. Good points - they should be competent. - what else might be going on Bad points - accusatory and unprofessional language - 'confident' and 'personable'. Not everyone is cut out from the same corporate ideal, so if this is the way general hierarchy think, no wonder OP feels under fire
